sylvie you can use the link iceman gave above and then select 'directions' near top left of the screen, then enter a 'starting' location and google maps will work out a route, how many km it is, provide a map of the route and text list of directions.

by the way if you do do the above check out the '3d' view. Probably not very useful from pratical point of view but looks very cool
