| Turkish Foreign Minister Ali Babacan informed the Turkish Grand National Assembly about the latest stage reached on the Cyprus issue. Here Mr. Babacan said the foundation parameters that Turkey is looking for during the Cyprus negotiations process are as follows. The equal statues of the two founding states, the continuation of the guarantee and alliance agreements, the adaptation of the European Union itself to the solution agreement and the solution plan being put to a simultaneous referendum on both sides of the island. Noting that the Cyprus issue is the most important foreign policy matter for Turkey the Turkish Foreign Minister reiterated that Turkey supports a just and lasting solution being found to the Cyprus problem based on the United Nations parameters. |

| Explaining that the Justice and Development Party continued to work towards this issue in 2008, Babacan said work towards ending the unjust isolation and embargoes imposed against the Turkish Cypriot people have gained momentum. Reminding that the two sides in Cyprus had been meeting since 3rd of September and were discussing many issues at the negotiating table, Foreign Minister Babacan said Turkey still supported a solution being found within the framework of the UN Secretary Generals good office mission. ‘We support a solution that secures the political equality of the two sides and the establishment of a new partnership state’, he added. He concluded his address to the assembly by saying that close economic ties between Turkey and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus continued and ‘every issue concerning the Republic is of great interest to Turkey. We will always continue our close relationship with the Republic’. From BRT Online http://www.brtk.cc/index.php/lan |
