I heard what may be true or what may be a rumour, but I heard that after so many years your car in cyprus is classed as classic and the tax becomes cheaper or you dont have to pay tax at all.

Can anyone shed some light on this for me please.

Many thanks

You definitely do still pay tax for a classic car but it is 65% discounted. However, you have to be a member of the Classic Car Club and your car has to be registered with its own photo licence type thingy. All this costs money of course. Currently, a car has to be over 25 years old to be classed as a classic (this may be changing to 30 years). Any car over 25 years old will naturally pay less tax but it has to be an accepted "classic" to qualify for the 65% discount (as far as I know). Classic cars also do not require an emissions test.

The import regulations in Turkish Republic of North Cyprus do allow importation of Classic Cars on the condition they comply with the following:

1.A motor vehicle considered classic if it is over 25 years old.

2.The word classic vehicle indicates any motor vehicles.

3.Commercial Vehicles are not normally considered as a classic car.The executive committee of Classic and Sports Car Club of North Cyprus gives the final decision whether the vehicle is a real classic.

4.The Classic & Sports Car Club of North Cyprus investigates the vehicle and sends a letter to the Antiquities Department indicating whether the vehicle in concern is or is not a classic vehicle.

5.Kit Cars or Modified Vehicles are not considered as classic vehicle.

to be continued with no 6....

6.The imported classic vehicle is taxed based on its value when it was new. The importer of the vehicle is responsible in providing concrete evidence to the Club and Department of Customs and Excise to prove the vehicles value when new.The letter which shows the vehicles value when new can be obtained from the vehicles Club or any agent selling such brand.

7.The original log book of the vehicle must be submitted to the Club with the application.

8.The Club discourages any misuse of the law and encourages the importation of real classic vehicles and not any old vehicle.

9.For its services,The Club asks for a minimum donation.Equivalent to ½ minimum monthly salary indicated by the government.

10.All payable taxes effective on 1/1/2010 are mentioned below:

Price Stability Tax : $500.00 USD

Price Stability Tax : %6

Defence Tax : %2.5

Wharfage Tax : %4.4

Car Tax : %10

VAT : %20

there is no tax on the engine size. But roadtax is expensier on big heavy cars!

One can own a vehicle for a long time in the UK or just recently own it, won't matter at all. Also If the title is not transferred to your name yet ,you need a bill of sale and the title.

I suggest that you speak to Tamer Konat of the Classic Sports and Car Club. We have shipped our MGB Roadster from the UK this year and without Tamers help it would have taken forever. We spoke to him a year before we actually decided to send it over and he was able to point us in the right direction at all stages. He was the most helpful guy that we have ever met in 5 years of visting Noth Cyprus and would highly recommend that anyone interested in Classic cars visit him, he has a great passion for them.
