Have started homebrewing using real ale kits from UK. First batch - disaster, second batch getting better. Has anyone got any experience from either UK, here, or any other hot climate?

Well you need hard water for brewing so the tap water's not the problem. If you are using bottled water then that could be it... Tap water should be boiled and cooled first of course... I used to make all my home brew in the airing cupboard which made the clothes smell funky! So I don't think ambient heat will be the problem. I would have thought that this time of year would be ideal heat-wise.

I used to brew my own beer in Saudi. Although we didn't have the luxury of the kits from the UK as there was no way of getting them into the country. Never as good as the real thing though.

Hi Kipper Might be a bit on the cool side now, I used to brew mine on top of a cupboard that the central heating boiler was in. Then put it in a barrel. That was about 25 years ago, Cheaper here to buy it Good luck

Groucho. Thank you for youir second posting. I think you are right about the tap water, and I will try it next time. What do you think is wrong with the bottled water; it isn't desalinated is it? Also, thank you to everyone else who took the time to post their comments.

the best help may come from Expats.org.uk it will link you to as much advice as you wish to read. I have lived in Saudi arabia for a couple of years now (22 or 23) and believe you me making booze is a fine art and I have drank some seriously good homebrew, along with some bad of course. Anyway take a look at the link identified above

Kipper, The bottled water is not desalinated it is just too soft... it is gathered from a natural source of soft water and hence does not fur up your kettle etc. which is good and what you want... but it's no good for beer brewing as a result... Breweries in Britain have historically always been built near the source of good hard water needed as to do otherwise would have been bonkers... rivers fed from chalk downs are the usual order of business... nowadays with water piped in from miles away it's not so crucial as the supply of other things like consumers, staff and transport links
