ATTORNEY-GENERAL Pertos Clerides said that so far this month, 60 applications had been lodged for compensation at the Immovable Property Commission (IPC) in the north.

The IPC has so far settled 181 applications but faces a backlog.

Around mid-August, 179 applications had been settled and 1,604 applications had been made.

Over 400 additional applications have since been lodged, with over 2,000 applications made so far.

The IPC has so far paid out almost €67 million in compensation, mostly through friendly settlements.

The IPC was set up in 2006 by Turkey in order to handle the property claims of displaced Greek Cypriots.

Its aim is “to satisfy the legitimate claims of property owners without prejudice to the rights of the Turkish Cypriot Community.”

A 2010 decision by the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) ruled that the IPC was “an effective domestic remedy”.

Greek Cypriots can no longer apply directly to the ECHR for cases involving the loss of property.

The IPC has officially declared that it will be closing its doors on December 21.
