I just wanted to record my sincere thanks to Hasip (Life Centre), Paul and Dan Alldred, Bryn Lewis and Asif Hayat and all the gents and ladies who made it possible today for us to renew the British Cemetery (near Mercedez Benz outlet) stones. All stones, JCB, vehicles, time and effort were given free. It took a while but we got there. Despite all the crap we sometimes have to put up with to live here.... this is the sort of venture that makes it a good place to be. Thank you everyone.

Thanks for your assistance Sue you little star you! And of course to the following for giving us their assistance without looking for recompense or reward: 1. Jade & Hasip from the Life Centre in Dogankoy who donated the 10 tons of gravel 2. Paul and Dan Aldred who helped to load the truck 3. Bryn Lewis, Carringtons for the loan of the truck to move the gravel from Esentepe to the cemetery in Girne 4. Asif Hayat, Carringtons whose driving and manoeuvring was a joy to behold 5. The 15 volunteers who freely gave of their time to shovel up the gravel from the pavement outside the cemetery and ensured that the place is looking spick and span again. And finally to the owner of the shop across the road who brought litres of water across as he was so impressed with the work and camaraderie being shown. A few more painting and varnishing jobs and we will be ready for Remembrance Sunday. Hope to see you all there. Brian

Just a small amendment. Asif Hayat was not the driver (but his driving and manoeuvring is probably a joy to behold) of the JCB. He is the General Manager for Carringtons and he brought in the truck to transport the stones, even though we had not been promised one by Carringtons, and generally was "the man" on the day. Thanks Asif.

Someone was telling me today about the magnificent community effort that went into this one, and then they asked 'What about a road up to the new cemetery?' sounded a very good idea. Is there anyway we could get a community project going (assuming the Belediye would allow it). My husband was a road builder, so has a little knowledge, but of course it would need funding and some muscle power... but what do you think. It has been said that the cemetery has a good view - it does, but not for those 6 feet under, and it is difficult for a bereaved person to go and 'pop in' to talk with their loved one and take a bunch of flowers. any idea anyone!!????

Probably need more info Marion. I assume this is the new cemetery... as I have not been there myself. I am sure, as it is west of Girne that the good folk in your neck of the woods could put something together to raise funds. After all, we are good at raising money for all manner of things. Probably the wrong time of year to contemplate any actual work but fund-raising could begin. Would need the Belediye permission before starting anything though.

Maybe the vicar of St Andrew's might have advice, funding avenues & Belediye sources who could help with this project.

Nice ideal Tom Steel, but I don't think the Vicar is the one to know - more likely contaccts through the BRS or Cemetery committee. and to CarrierBag, it i the winter that saddens me, as already people I know who are newly bereaved with their loved ones buried up there are realising how bad any access will be when the rains come. I could not go up there in my car. Agree Belediye wouuld need permission - that goes without saying, but I think this is for everyone, not just the folk up here. The only other cemetery is famagusta, so it looks as if just about everyone else (the majority off the ex pats)o wouldd need this cemetery for burial. And it needs an organisation to be behind it, not just a group of indi viduals. Anyone else any ideas.

I understand the access to the new cemetery is over private land, and the landowner won't even allow permanent direction signs; the Cemetery Committee have to erect them before each funeral and remove them afterwards. I think the chances of a proper road are slim, to say the least, but you don't know until you've tried. The Cemetery Committee should be able to give you the details of the land owner.

I think that this thread is really about the British Cemetery in Girne, not the Green Hills cemetery.

It was Cocklebay but its moved on...as is the norm. It is still about a British cemetery so don't think the thread has been hijacked. I started the thread and am happy with discussing Green Hills here too.

There is another track that comes to Green Hills Cemetery from Karaman,- reasonable road to start with but gets very dodgy towards the cemetery. Perhaps that would be a better option for grading or making up, certainly shorter, but both ways will need 4 x 4 if we have much rain.

Went passed the road junction up to the Green Hills cemetry and there now seems to be a permanent sign erected, but only just above ground level 2 foot high at the most. Cassius

Message 15. I was'nt suggesting that the thread was hi-jacked, just did not want people getting confused and heading in the wrong direction on Remembrance Sunday! I won't be there as I will hopefully be at the Cenotaph in London!

There's more going on behind the scenes: I've just been told that the Cemetery Committee is in discussions with Girne Belediye over the access road to the GreenHill Cemetery, and the Belediye accepts and agrees that provision of a road is the responsibility of the State. So it's another "wait and see" situation where a lot of people work incredibly hard to achieve what we all want without any acknowledgement.

Thanks for the info Donaldson. Guess I need to have a chat with the Cemetery Committe to find out all about it, but isn't it marvellous ' it is the responsibility of the state'! I do not mind whose responsibility, and I do not mind personally that people who work hard to not get acknowledgement (the world has been ever thus), but I do mind when the buck gets passed and nothing gets done. I think a road to this cemetery is VITAL, if love and compassion to the bereaved is to be seen. So who can band together to plead with the State. (and thanks CarrieRBag for allowing the 'hi jacking of this. I realise I should really start another thread).

Just a little worried here, CarrieRBag as to what substance is to be used to my fill boots. Is this a Northern expression unbeknown to we, southerners. I hope it is not the stuff my father used to tell me to put in my boots to make me grow! That was nasty stuff.

Well done to everybody who was involved in the restoration work at the Cemetery. Its great to see that there are still wonderful people who are willing to give up their time, resourses and efforts for free. Long may it continue as we strive to build a better community for all in Northern Cyprus.

Good morning Ladies, We use fill yer boots in Yorkshire, its a term expressed in a positive way to take / have more. The idea of 'filling your boots' almost certainly dates back to the days when a victorious army would plunder the places they had recently attacked and defeated. Obviously, the soldiers would stuff their pockets, saddle-bags or whatever and then - so as not to miss anything - even their boots with booty...if you'll forgive the choice of word! Soldiers - particularly cavalrymen - in past times often wore wide thigh-length boots which were quite roomy! That's why we have the modern sense of "take full advantage" when we use the saying." From the answer bank.
