So KAR can put animals to sleep?

Why on EARTH don't they do that to strays, instead of condemning them to a life of dodging cars, kicks from people who don't want them near them, starvation, thirst, never knowing where their next meal is coming from (after picking them up, spaying them, removing ticks and fleas, giving them sustenance, giving them a feeling of security and comfort and warmth, when maybe they were thrown out, or abandoned, so are traumatised anyway - they think - oh, I am safe again) only to be put back in the streets hours later???????

This is bizarre

Ms Garnet, i think it was because he was old and dying, and it was considered his only option ?, they said that the dog warden picked him up , im not sure if thats Kar dog warden ? he was taken to the vets , and after assesment, put to sleep :(

Thank goodness you saw him and helped him, at least he didn't die at the side of the road.

We, too, saw this poor animal this morning. We went home and took him food and water but he made no effort to eat or drink. We were appalled by how emaciated he was and felt incredibly sad and angry that an owner could have left a dog to die in this state. Isn't it about time that the State helped to fund KAR and took some responsibility for the strays here. The problem seems to be too big for KAR to deal with. I agree with a previous posting - what is the point of taking in a stray, neutering it, caring for it and then putting it back on the street? Surely it would be more humane to put them to sleep.

i could kick myself, as i glimpsed him earlier but did not stop......but went out of my way to go back with food an hour later, if i had seen first time, up close, how bad he was i could have got him help sooner, Kar called me at 3pm, to let me know what happened, my call (before my credit finished) was at 12.40, so it wasnt too long, but then again a long time for him dying in the sun , its really upset me, but if KAR were not here, how much longer would he have suffered?

i dont always agree with Kar practice, but we only see the end product...stray dogs, we dont see what goes on behind closed doors?

moxie - if you had not made the effort to call KAR then the poor dog would have been left there dying on his own. You helped his last bit of time here a better time than it otherwise would have been.

MsGarnet - the decision (and action) to put an animal to sleep lies with the vet - not KAR.

Thank you Hamish for your kind words................the image of that poor old dog falling over will haunt me for a long time..

PLEASE, if you see a dog/animal in distress, dont pass it by , assuming someone has called for help, or ignore it, because it happenes here all the time .If we all think like that a lot more animals will suffer, maybe for a long time!yes its part and parcel of living here, but a conscience should still prevail?

Call Kar or a vet, or ask advice !

Moxie, thank you for helping this poor old dog, he may not have had a great life but you made sure that he had a peaceful death. The owners should hang their heads in shame

One of our own rescued dogs was in a similar state when we took him, he is now a beautiful greyhound.

Ms Garnet, the vets will not put to sleep a healthy dog , also there is no incinerator on the island so where would the "culled" dogs be disposed of ?

Please, everyone who reads this post , support KAR who do a fantasic job in, often, very straitened circumstances

Moxie I feel for you but you did what you could to ease the poor soul's passage, I just wish the owners could be held accountable.

I met a lovely Cypriot man who had stopped and helped a badly injured Alsation. I was at Petcross with one of ours when he came in with the emergency dog. He paid 3,000TL for the operation and necessary care for the animal and then said he would take her on. My faith in human nature in NC was restored.

Stuart, those pictures of Riley, that I saw today in town, were so upsetting. How can anyone let an animal suffer like that.

Well done to you and Nikki on his total transformation and rehabilitation.

We should all appreciate the work that KAR do for these suffering animals and think before we knock their policies, as they do what they can with the resources they have.

Bless you Moxie, for the dog to have died in the way you describe is simply appalling and thank you for doing what you did. I wonder just how many people drove by and did nothing. Shame on you if you read this thread. This happens all the time and just because somebody like Moxie actually does something to help is the only method of bringing it to the public notice. An assessment will have been made as to whether it was put down by a VET, KAR DO NOT PUT animals down.

god im still tearing up when i read all these posts, i cant get him out of my head, ive seen worse than this, but this old fella really hit home, its not ok to dump dogs , he was someones pet, and they left him to die.

Kar do what they can , they have never let me down when i call....................yes i could have got a vet to see to him , and would have spent my rent/bill money on him. Thank god we have KAR, for it would be a lot worse without them.

Hey yel2011 , its good to know im not the only one lol !!

Thanks Msg. 19. There are times when we all get a bit punch drunk with the continual knock downs we get. As someone else said in the thread, we do all that we can with the resources we have, AND ITS NEVER ENOUGH. Thanks.

"...the vets will not put to sleep a healthy dog , also there is no incinerator on the island so where would the "culled" dogs be disposed of ?"...

If tick ridden, disease ridden, flea ridden, starving, homeless, emotionally traumatised, dehydrated, dodging cars, kicks from people who don't want you near them, being attacked by other feral, abandoned, traumatised, homeless, starving, thirsty dogs - fighting each other to be the one to wolf down a small scrap of food they simultaneously find somewhere is "healthy" then GOD knows what the definition of unhealthy would be...

No incinerator? How hard or expensive could it be to build one? How many spayings, de-fleaing, de-ticking, petrol costs of driving to collect, back to Kar, drive back to pick-up point, drop off back to the same horrendous life it thought it had escaped from - would equal the cost of one incinerator? nope - doesn't wash - to my mind - the resources Kar has are being spent in the wrong direction/way...

Scum.

Some of these people should be put in a cage with a dozen ill treated dogs out for revenge and a good feed.

Even killing the old dog would have been better than leaving it to slowly die.

I totally agree with the comments made in message 24. The policy of taking strays from the wild, neutering them and returning them is futile. KAR's resources could be better spent and some financial help from the Government should also be forthcoming.
