I was sitting at the computer when suddenly there was a severe hammering at the front door. By the time I found the key and unlocked it there was nobody there - but I had got a new house number hammered onto the concrete adjacent to the door together with a large crack which will cause a big chunk of concrete to break away soon. Investigation revealed that the original number (decorative and privately purchased) that had been attached to the wall by the gate had been removed. Further investigation revealed that the adjacent houses have had their numbers changed also - although some numbers are still pinned by the gate whereas others are now by the front door (where they can't be seen from the road).

I am in Karsiyaka so presumably Lapta Belediyese have done this.

Does anybody know what is going on????? Are we the only street affected????

This is in readiness for the census next month. All streets/roads are to be named and houses numbered. There was something in Cyprus Today last week. I live in Karsiyaka, in an unamed street. Have got a new number but no street name yet. Luckily my hubby was there and got our own 'bonnie' number plate taken off before it went walkabout.

Yup...i got one too....i think (correct me if i am wrong) that it is to do with the census, as very few houses have numbers so it's hard to track how many people there are...so i imagine soon there will be someone at your door with a bunch of questions....

Or something like that....?

I was not living here at the last census. What date is it please? Do they come in and ask questions or do we get left a form? Is it true that you cannot leave your house until they come?!!

Yep you can't leave your house until the Census people have been. They come in and ask a few questions didn't take long last time 5 minutes max.

If people cannot leave their house does this mean that all shops will be closed, no hospital staff, no police, buses, taxis, electricity workers, the list is endless!!

Going by past census days I think that the only people allowed to travel form their front door on the day are the census takers, emergency services and those directly involved in moving tourists for flights.

Regarding the house number, there was a thread here about this a short time ago.

Regarding the census, a week or two ago a young couple knocked at the door and started asking questions - said they were from the Mukhtar for the Belideye but could not produce identification. I refused to answer questions without identification and they went away! Mind you, I think the fact that three dogs (behind a dog gate) were showing great interest in the procedings might have had something to do with their failure to insist. I was concerned because the first question was "how many people live here? and how was I to know that they were not burglars "casing the joint"

I hope when they do the census they will provide identification.

PS Last time they did the census you couldnt leave your house for most of the day until the census was complete. Some people arranged street parties! Me, I just got on with a lot of jobs in house and gardenI had been putting off

I had a number - I was 25. Now I am 35 which means telling many people, changing car registration, bank addresses, insurance address etc. etc. etc.

Ok, so my next question is will they have enough census takers to call at every single house in TRNC in just 1 day, and what about those people who are away on holiday, i.e. Brits back for a couple of weeks in the UK. Has this actually been thought through - I think maybe not!!

I know of lots of people (Brits mostly) who made a decision NOT to be at home for the last census i.e. they didn't want to be registered and I know of one person who lives in a rented property who has already been asked by his TC landlord, NOT to be at home because HE (the landlord) will have to pay tax on the rental paid! Oh what a tangled web we weave.

Actually the last census was so funny. This bank clerk on double time came with the forms, he asked the questions and wrote in pencil so the could be changed!! Spent less than 10 minutes on the forms and then another 15 telling us about his relatives who had car hire, car wash and cafes. Leaving cards for all three!! Sorry to say that IMHO it's all a joke (although it shouldn't be). BTW students, civil servants etc etc are all paid (and paid well I think) to do the census. Not sure just how much though, but last time our chap was more than satisifed. They don't like dogs though!!

From what I,ve learnt,,,, I think you might find that the original numbers you had were your plot numbers.

Belideyes are now issueing house numbers..evens on one side ,odds on the other, with street names to follow.

As I say... I think

re msg 15-they renumbered my villa in ozankoy last sunday-2 villas in a private lane owned by the villa owners-previously they were numbered 1 and 2-mine being nunber 2(quite logical really)

now they have renumbered my neighbours villa number 2, and mine number 4.

Please explain the logic of that anyone, especially given that it's a private lane.

The last census of my property was done by a student. She could not speak English so my neighbour, a local, had to be there to translate . It took no more than ten minutes. Nobody is allowed to leave your house till 6pm , for ANYTHING! Questions like :- How many rooms /bedrooms/bathrooms/ showers/ people living there/ ages/children/pets/nationality/how long you have been here/ etc.etc

Last time we had a census, we were all giving numbers, but in the meantime, a lot have fallen off the walls, and some streets have grown and changed numbers. It's all part of the charm of here. I think it's great. Where else would you have to stay in all day to be counted?
