I purchased a copy yesterday for the first time in ages. I always used to buy it every Saturday and I had forgotten why I had stopped purchasing it. When the shopkeeper told me it was 3 lira, I remembered why I had ceased to purchase. I took it home and "read" it and I will not be buying another copy for a very long time. A 50% increase in price, to my view, is unacceptable, especially as there was very little in it.

Cyprus Today fear that putting it on line would adversely affect sales, but does this reason hold water when their sister paper Kibris is on line ► http://www.kibrisgazetesi.com or as google translate

The paper is not news worthy it's format is outdated and it's expensive, I do understand why people don't buy it any more The editor needs to revamp it to make it credable.

Bringing out 2 editions a week hasn't improved the paper only halved the amount of news for twice the price. I used to pay for it too be sent to the UK but not at twice the price it used to be. I'm disappointed at the content, little local news, poor comment and few letters. Is it really independent in its views and reporting bearing in mind who owns it? If it was online it would increase it's standing and also report to the world what's going on in North Cyprus. What it lost in local sales it should make up in advertising.

@ msg 7, Hector: (...) If it was online it would increase it's standing and also report to the world what's going on in North Cyprus. (...)

▶ All newspapers in the world face the same problem/question: "Will readers pay to read the full content on line?".

The answer is always: No, with only very few exceptions (some specialised publications with expensive advertisements).

The full content of "Cyprus Today" free on line - in a very small and cheap advertising market - would doubtless mean suicide of the organisation.

Many (serious) news papers, including "Cyprus Today" I fear, are going to fold in this decennium, whether they are going digital or not. People today want short "news" stories for free. The preferences and interests of most people are well known in the world of the printed and digital media.

If Cyprus Today put it's headline stories online then it would get read around the world. A lot of people/organisations/governments/politicians have an interest in the TRNC. Once Cyprus Today has established an online presence then advertising would be more beneficial to businesses. Most UK newspapers are free online (Telegraph/Daily Mail etc) with the exception of The Times and they wont give out details as to how many subscribers are paying.

▶ True. But this quote* is what it is really all about: "Newspapers are in business to make money. Period. Sure, they’re in business to keep the world informed, but only as long as they’re profitable. Period."

As far as I know there are very few if any newspapers making money on the on line department. Even worse. I know of quite a lot of newspapers on all continents where the on line department has been cut down to an absolute minimum (investment and staff). The old fashioned printed or digital newspapers have a very bleak future.

The Daily Mail in the Uk do but they are the exception to the rule relying on people checking for goods and services, best buy tables and reviews then using the internet connections to then purchase these items which results in excellent financial kick backs for the newspaper.

To do this you need to be a mass market newspaper with millions of loyal readers who trust you for impartial help and advice not easily replicated and certainly not possible in a market the size of Cyprus.

▶ Where would that be, Hector? The UK? Any idea about the circulation of Cyprus Today at the moment in Northern Cyprus and the UK?

▶ No, NCFP has not. There are international acknowledged rules about quoting from newspapers - NCFP did it within the rules.

▶ plaigarised = plagiarised
