My neighbours spoke to the police station at ensentepe yesterday they told him there had been 6 burglaries in their area in the last week or so.

People be aware.

Blimey a talking police station... they've got the latest gadgetry here... next it'll be a computer...

Any idea of the type of burglary, e.g. unoccupied, occupied, night time etc.

As I live in Esentepe village, this obviously is a real worry for me, please could you tell me whether the burglaries had been in the village or in the new build estates by the sea front....

There seems to be a proffessional gang at work as a friend of mine was also robbed last week and 7 others in her estate in karakum. This happened at night while they were asleep upstairs...

I hope that they catch these people soon!!

Plasma TV's being the most stolen item....

Won't be interested in out 12 year old TV then !

Well let's hope the large screen plasma TVs lead to the culprits... they are a bit obvious.

Coachie, I think they will come and clobber the perpetrator for you and who says they are TRNC citizens. See other threads that show more likely to be Turkish mainland citizens.

The officer in Esentepe seems a very fair minded guy.

Always seems a pity that these incidents seem to be kept quiet, I have heard of a number of burglary's arround the Ozankoy area this has been ongoing for about a year now. may be time to start the old neibourhood watch as no doubt with things getting tighter these incidents may well increase.

Hi there,

Re- message 4 My house was burgled a month ago, Karakum/Ozankoy Road, the same scenario, we were in bed asleep. Sound like the same lot and I do agree that they need to be caught. My sympathy to your friend, it is not a pleasant experience.

Message 9 Yes these burglaries have been happening in Ozankoy for the past year and I have been warning people on these boards since then. Sorry to say this but if you look at my post 'Serious Crime' here you will note that a lot of 'Brits' doubt the existance of crime in TRNC and live in their plastic bubble asuming that it will never happen to them, same as my last warning in July.

I even got private mails suggesting that I shouldn't scare people because it was an isolated incident ??????????? God Forbid that anyone should be raped or murdered in their beds.

Re-message 7

I think that you will find that the laws of the TRNC are very different from Britain, in that here you are allowed to protect yourself. Two of my TC neighbours who were also burgled have acquired a hunting license and shotgun and asked my husband if he would like to join their hunting club.

Something that may be of interest to members worried about security, we as a company in conjunction with John Cooper (Wynyardman) are now in a position to demonstrate a very effective security system which is unobtrusive (not easily spotted) and reasonably priced, we will not explain or discuss the system on board, however anyone is welcome to call in at our office on Turquoise bay for a demonstration tel:- 0533 8604854 office hours 10am - 4pm

Message 17 -

"unobtrusive (not easily spotted)"

Personally I've always believed that deterence is better - If a Bl##dy great bright yellow box and a warning notice puts 'em off 'burglarising' your place, then you don't have to worry about repairing the damage that they did, or clearing the sh#t up, or recovering the stolen items, or persuading your better half that the house is still safe to live in, and there's no need to sell up.

I would go for 'As obtrusive as possible' and aim to prevent the heartbreak.

Just my opinion of course...

Hi keithcaley

'As obtrusive as possible'

Yes I agree,

alarm system was't one of the "to buy" things on our list.

When we moved here.

But maybe empty houses full of goodies,

is just too much for some.

Does anyone know if any occupied houses

in the Esentepe area have been burgled?

At a previous house,

I put up a dummy bright yellow security box high on the wall,

no problem at all with the house.......

They stole our car!!! :-(

How to these people obtain access to the property, might help with assessing security measures.

Not about to start posting tips that might encourage budding burglars, and I see that you have concealed your email address.

If you care to drop me a line, I'll give you the benefit of my experience - as a householder, that is - never been in the security business!

Sorry allycatthree,

If I'd had the sense to look at your 'postings' I would have realised that you can't see email addresses yet - my fault.

Everybody and his dog knows mine - keithcaley@yahoo.com - so drop me a line anytime.

Best regards,

Keith.

Heard today, there was an attempted break in

at a house in Esentepe on Sunday night,

burglar alarm was tripped.

The thieves are still about!

Anyone else know of any other incidents?

May be dropping you an email Keith :-(

Navek,

Here's the gist of my response to alleycatthree, for what it's worth - if anyone has any observations or contrary points of view, I'm always willing to learn!

Sliding windows and doors do seem to be the favoured method of entry - good additional UK-sourced locks to stop them being jemmied open are the way to go. Don't forget to do the upstairs ones as well, - one member said that they climbed up his pergola and got in that way...

The incidence of crime really is much lower here - most break-ins seem to be the work of either a couple of juveniles who the police promptly catch, or the occasional unemployed building worker who is desperate for something to eat and leaves everything else alone.

I think that shutters are a bit over the top, although of course they do enhance security considerably, but many people favour them as a means of keeping the house cool / warm, and they do help keep the dust out. contd...

An alarm box in a prominent position has always proved to be a good deterrent in my experience (dummy or real, seems to make no difference!) - in the UK neighbours on either side were burgled, but my house - with alarm box- was always avoided.

Thoughtfully placed PIR security lights are also a bit of a shock to someone sneaking around in the dark - I know that I would leg it if I was suddenly illuminated by a 500W light! - They can be a bit of a problem for neighbours of course, and it is essential to make sure that the field of illumination does not extend beyond your boundary, and that it is not prone to being triggered by stray cats and dogs.

Garden sheds and garages have been targeted a few times, but you're not dealing with James Bond here, simple precautions should suffice.

Oh! - and a good stout chain and large padlock around your generator if you have one - our builder said that they are prone to go walkies, and one member at least, Groucho in Esentepe, had his nicked.

Having said all that, I often go out forgetting to lock, or even to close doors and windows, including the shed door. I forget to bring garden tools and car stuff in, I've left them out overnight on the road, pavement or driveway, and nothing has ever gone missing (yet!), and my road is used as a cut-through to Alsancak sports stadium, so there are kids up and down the road... - Also new houses being built, so plenty of Kurdish / Mainland building workers. I never lock my car outside supermarkets or restaurants, and in summer I leave the keys in, and the engine running so that the aircon keeps the car cool!

Don't get too hung up on security - it really isn't bad here - but you should probably take a little more care than I do ;-)

Best regards,

Keith.

Nice one.

the odd burglary is hard to stop.

But a spate usually means organised scum, to which thankfully they usually get caught.

Better not say would I think should happen to them, otherwise the PC's may well be upset.

Read this on glencoecyprus web site yesterday, seems they were loading into a boat or taking off a boat when they got caught, mainland Turks maybe?
