I am not a massive downloader but I do download a few TV programmes each week and have done for a couple of years now. All of a sudden my download speed appears to be "restricted" even though my contract states I have "unlimited" downloads available.

It doesn't matter which site I use so the problem isn't there, speed tests show good speed (1 meg contract) so I can't think where else the problem lies. Pages load as quickly as ever.

Has anyone any opinions please.

1/ Suggest that you write and ask them - saying that you believe your actual speed throughput is WAY down

2/ If you don't get an answer ( say in 72 hours) ask one more time

3/ Try another ISP - if you can - with a similar advertised service - using the same pc and broadband checker

examples:

http://www.thinkbroadband.com/speedtest.html

http://www.speedtest.bbmax.co.uk ( gives accurate results for satellite broadband)

Basically try to do the same thing with different ISPs and see if your gut feeling is proven correct.

Hi compass,

I'm with Nethouse, (1 meg contract) and downloading just now.

Getting download speeds of 100 to 118.4kB/s over the last 30 seconds.

This is with the old dish, not the new Motorola Canopy.

Try to update the tracker, or restart your BitTorrent.

What BitTorrent are you using?

Thanks for the advice guys, I'm using "utorrent" and always have, nothing has changed with what I'm doing or how I'm doing it. Navek I to used to get 110 to 120 kB/s now it seems more like 40 to 50 is the avearge for last week or so, although this morning is better, we'll see how long it lasts.

I have the new Motorola system (for about a year now) and has always been OK.

I did actually phone them and asked the question, they said try a speed test, which I had already done and it showed all was ok. I then got the equivalent of a shrug... over the phone.

Stuck with them for another 6 months or so on this contract.......

I looked at taking up the camapaign with Nethouse at the reduced price, but was advised that you were limted on the amount of downloads in the monthly rate, so stopped with Extend

I too have suddenly started having the same problem as compass with Nethouse. This started just over a week ago. Exactly the same scenario. Speedtests showed I was still getting the same download speeds as before, but suddenly downloading via utorrent went down to a snailspace.

I went for their 4 mb download package not realising that it was eco & limited download because there was no indication that this was the case. I am now stuck with Nethouse until December 2012, unless I want to waste the 1020 TL I paid for this now useless internet (if |I want to download TV).

My download speeds when using utorrent suddenly dropped from up to 400 kbps to 5 kbps or even worse. Reseeding torrents stopped altogether as well.

I am now using a VPN & this has helped a bit, but I am not getting anything like the speeds that I was before but at least I can watch I player too, at some times in the day.

However it seems that compass is not using the eco package ? so Nethouse really aren't playing fair

It's not that simple Groucho. This is a deliberate act by Nethouse & the downside of paying for a year in advance. No mention of restricted service when they took my money in July & I renewed 3 mths early.

I guess that is another ISP that I shall not be renewing with, after my current subscription runs out. Businesses here are SO SHORT SITED.

Nethouse/uTorrent download speeds 50kb plus;

nowhere near peak form but just as likely to be a uTorrent issue, as iPlayer seems fine.

Why are you all blaming Nethouse?

Not a Utorrent issue because download speeds are much better than Nethouse when using a VPN.

I have been using utorrent for 3 years now so I do know what I'm talking about. No problems whatsoever until just over a week ago.

Utorrent is totally safe & doesn't take up a lot of memory space. The stored TV programme downloads do, but I have an external hard drive for those, so no PC hard drive memory issues.

I can echo all Scruff has said as being correct.

I think we are all paying for Nethouse's campaign to try and keep up with Multimax............ maybe?

Share your results. I pay for 3 and below is pretty much what I usually get. I use the Internet for most of my TV, and download films etc.

I would estimate I "download" 3GB per day.

I have been pegged back to 1 MB a couple of times, but only for 24 hours.

Giles

No point in sharing my speedtest results. This is not the issue here. Download speeds still showing between 3 Gb & 4 Gb & upload up to 1 GB.

The point that compass, myself & another nethouse user on another thread last week are making, is that Nethouse are now blocking ports to stop people downloading/uploading via torrents sites.

This started in my case around 17/18th October. From that point until I started using a VPN, I was downloading 371 mb in just 17 minutes. Suddenly an equivalent download slowed down to several hours & up to 5/6 hrs in one case. Uploading, which is the whole point of P2P torrent sharing, stopped altogether.

Since I have been using the VPN on 20th October, my download speeds have improved again (although not as fast as they were) & uploading is now working as before.

ctd.

I rarely download as much as 3 GB a day. Usually less than 1 GB & some days nothing at all.

This is the thread posted by invinceblenic just 1/2 days after I started to have exactly the same issue.

So that's 3 people using Nethouse all having exactly the same problem.

However clearly, compass & myself don't know what we are talking about.

I must be lucky Jen. My other half downloaded "strictly" in 16 mins this morning. Using my favourite P2P site I downloaded a film (800MB) as a test in 82mins. I am still using the old equipment and have paid for 12(15) months in advance.

Just read your final sentence (message 20) Jen. Once translated into English it makes little sense. Would you care to elucidate? Has someone been horrid to you?

Are you using the eko package & if so which download speed have you paid for ?

You seem to know me, but I'm not sure who you are Giles ?

Nobody has been horrid to me, but 10 years of Internet usage in the TRNC with up & down service have made me very niggly. Also people on this thread seem to be suggesting that Nethouse are not the issue when 3 different P2P users with Nethouse as their ISP seem to think otherwise.

TBH, I have no idea if I am on the Eko package or not. 900tl for 15 months, 3MB?

Scruff;

'Not a Utorrent issue because download speeds are much better than Nethouse when using a VPN.'

Sorry, but using a VPN via Nethouse is using Nethouse. Deal with it. If you are using a different ISP, why not say so?

'I have been using utorrent for 3 years now so I do know what I'm talking about.'

See above. You are not the only one who has been using uTorrent for a while.

Actual Basil using a VPN service can make a material difference if an ISP is either blocking or throttling specific ports related to p2p traffic but not those related to VPN use.

See here for some supporting evidence for this claim, though there is masses of it out there if you do doubt the claim.

Thanks for that Erol.

Might explain why the moment I disconnect from the VPN & revert back to Nethouse clear, torrenting now comes to a complete grinding halt & when reconnecting back to the VPN, it starts up again.

To be honest scruff I would not say that your symptoms proove that nethouse are throttling or blocking p2p ports. It certainly does suggest it but there are other possibilites as to why the difference when using your VPN and not that are not down to Nethouse blocking or throttling certain ports.

So what are the other possibilities Erol ?

Why have compass, myself & possibly others too suddenly noticed a massive drop in downloading speed to near or even zero in my case, when others using Nethouse eko package seem not to be suffering with this problem.

Scruff using a VPN will primarily change the route between you and wherever the source is, with p2p it may even change what sources are presented to you. A secondary feature of the VPN use would be the potential bypassing of port blocks or port based throttling. The difference you see in speed with utorrent when using your VPN and when not could be related to the different routing the VPN causes or it could be related to the bypassing of port restrictions. This is essentialy speculation on my part to be clear.

In an ideal world it should be simple to establish if an ISP is operating port blocking and or port based throttling. You would contact them and ask and they would give you an honest reply. Of course we do not live in an ideal world :(

I have the Multimax 4mb service and all of yesterday, when I was catching up on downloads via utorrent, it never dipped below 500 kb/s download speed and ran for quite a long time at over 600 kb/s.

Message 14.

Looking just now at my memory usage I see:-

Firefox 682,480K

Firefox Plug-in container 188,820K

Explorer 47,100K

Utorrent 33,600K

...and Utorrent has 9 active torrents and is running over 500 kb/s download and 65 upload.

That doesn't seem much to me!

Only joking, you're other info shows how little Utorrent uses, I remember that being a factor in my choosing it in the first place.

Sorry about that - but it gives you something to challenge Nethouse with......and if you haven't got any improvement in the next 6 months then you know where to look.
