If you phone 112, they take you to the Girne state hospital. I think the private hospitals have their own emergency numbers.

112 is a free service and nearly all of the doctors at the State Hospital speak english. I have had the misfortune to have to call them on more than one occasion and been very impressed with them and their response time. If you phone one of the other ambulances linked to private hospitals you will be charged. On arrival at the state hospital we have been seen immediately - no waiting around in corridors here if you are taken in in an ambulance

Unfortunately I spent 3 days (seemed like 3 weeks) in the state hospital this summer and agree doctors could speak decent English but only saw them each end of the day (same as UK). During the day my experience was "older" nurses treated/not treated me poorly and did not understand any English but younger ones even if not understanding me treated me ok. I discharged myself to get treatment privately and amazingly non speaking nurses then spoke to me in English to get the money owed. All in all I will never go back and Aviva insurance now have this logged on their files for any holiday makers who fall ill nearby.

We had to use the service two years ago when my wife fell and broke her hip. She was in Girne State Hospital for two weeks as she fell on a Wednesday, which is the operating day for that doctor and she had missed the list, so had to wait till the following Wednesday. I have to say that she had very good treatment, the staff took pains to keep her cheerfull and the doctor did his absolute best, even attending her at home on two occasions following the operation. Regretably his skill in replacing broken hips was sketchy at best and the whole thing had to be redone in UK a year later. It would seem that not enough people break their hips here, so that the surgeon can learn his trade. However we both agree that "A" for effort has to be awarded to them and they really did do their very best. The bill at the end was £2,000 for the operation and the two week stay.
