It happened recently in Zeytinlik (near Girne), where my Turkish friend Mustafa Öcal from Haarlem was holidaying with his wife in her birth village. One day... his mother-in-law was almost killed when suddenly the top of her beautiful palm tree fell down and only just missed her. Reason? The feared killer bugs (as far as I know a couple of years ago imported into TRNC with palm trees from Egypt) had completely sawn of the top of the palm tree!

The bugs are now widely found in palm trees and spruces in TRNC. (If you want to know more about them, Google "Palm Tree Infestation by the Red Palm Weevil").

Here's what they look like: ▶ [ http://is.gd/qfiNTT/keywords_killer_bugs_palm_trees ].

Anyone else remember the palm trees imported a couple of years ago into TRNC from Egypt..? And what happened to them..? And whose great idea it was..?

By the way. The Red Palm Weevil is now also omni-present in the Five Fingers mountains (east of Girne). Traps can be found in many places, but they do not seem to be very useful (if I've read martinD41's link, msg 3, correctly)!

A late reply to msg2, because I had no idea what racoonchic was talking about - but after reading another thread I do. Read this thread, racoonchic, [ http://www.cyprus44.com/forums/75553.asp ], post 26. You are paranoid. Look it up.

And this was only started as a thread about bugs in palm trees in TRNC. How could I not suspect that several C44 bugs would join? Nothing worthwhile to say about the subject, but type they must. Sad specimen of the human race.

And this was only started as a thread about dangerous bugs in palm trees in TRNC. For people who might be interested to read or write about this subject.

Yes, I posted this last year.

We had an infestation and lost 1 tree before we realised what it was and then we saw cockcroach sized beetles emerging-Yuk!! You know when you have got them because the palm will sound alive with their constant munching deep inside the body of the tree. They devour it from the inside out and are most destructive. They can be stopped with perserverence. We used a product called Lanten( not sure of the spelling) and still have the other 4 palms but you have to stay on top of it because the cocoons can lay dormant for some time and only just caught more of them when they hatched a few weeks ago. Good luck to anyone who has these but I am sure they can be erradicated!
