If you have all switches off, ones not being used, and then swithc TV, micros, a/c's and all sockets off, then you will see adramatic drop in your bill. It's a pain in the backside, but less painfull than paying the bill!!!!!

Hi Nigel

Have you checked the no. of days the bill covers as this can vary quite a lot. We have found that lights (even low wattage ones) use a lot of electricity so we no longer have our outside lights on at night.

I only run what I need to run although my router and printer is on all the time as well as my water pump

My bill has just come in at 110YTL (Apt)

As the previous answer, only have the switches on that you need and turn off what you don't

Including the oven, Microwave, toaster Etc you dont need them on 24/7

Hi Nige

We run all the usual things (though no dishwasher or microwave and rare usage of air con) and also run a pool. Our meter readings this year have ranged from 282 (May) to 467 (July). The last 3 months have been 343, 382 and 313 respectively. There are two of us although we did have visitors in May and October.

No idea why your unit usage should be so high especially as you have no pool, unless you have used a lot of air con at some point.

Just realised you don't mention air con at all so maybe you've been making a lot of tea and toast!

Don't mean to make light of it because we are also on builders electric so I know how expensive it is. It really is a mystery.

Turn everything off, I mean everything then have a look at your meter and see if is still turning, it's not unusual for someone to "tap" in to your meter.

Hi Why not buy one of those electrical monitors like eco- eye .com We have one at our home in the UK we will be trying it out in NC when we get over there. A small device goes round you meter main cable and it monitors total KW consumption very accurate it will be able to telll you where the electric is being used cost around £40 to £50. Need no special skill to fit very easy works on a wirless signal to the display can be moved with you round the house as you try switching on-off differant appliances

nige .. Agree with the suggestion of switching every thing off for acouple o minutes and check if your meter stops registering. If it continues to read possible you have a leakage somewhere....Good electrician could check you out in a couple of hours.....

From a previous post I just copy and paste:

Example callculation for a 2kW Pool pump for 5 hrs / day:

5 x 2 = 10kWs / day

10kWs x 30 Days = 300kWs /month

First 250kWs cost you: 250kWs x (0,32 YTL+ 0,02 YTL Santral Payı )= 85 YTL

Rest 50kWs cost you: 50kWs x 0,41 YTL + 0,02 YTL Santral Payı = 21,50 YTL

Total: 106,50 YTL + % 16 VAT (17,04 YTL) = 123,54 YTL

If your Pump runs 10 hours / day then you have other tarifes! Your monthly consumption will be:

10 hrs x 2kW = 20kWs / Day

20 kWs x 30 = 600kWS / month !!

1st 250kWs cost you: 250kWs x (0,32 YTL+ 0,02 YTL Santral Payı )= 85 YTL

2nd 250kWs cost you: 250kWs x 0,41 YTL + 0,02 YTL Santral Payı) = 107,50 YTL

3rd 100kWs cost you: 100kWs x 0,44 YTL + 0,02 YTL Santral Payı) = 46 YTL

Total: 238,50 YTL + % 16 VAT (38,16 YTL) = 276,66 YTL

Thats only the pool pump.

An aircon energy class D (mostly sold cheap in TRNC) uses with 9000BTU approx 1kWs per hr. Running it 5 hrs a day would be a total consumption of

so if you are on builders electric you can take rough 1 YTL per unit. Fridges & freezers should use less energy now then in summer.

All others loads simply to calculate: Take the written Watt ammount and the running hrs. Thats what you use, e.g.: 500Whrs/day for your outside lamp. so this would cost you per day 0,50YTL. Do this for all items. See above for calc. example.

sunny regards.

If you are buying/replacing a fridge /freezer, avoid the 'frost free' ones!

They can use twice the amount of power than a low energy 'scrape it out yourself every 6 months' type. (You then find that pack of lamb chops at the back!).

Make sure every light, even small bedside lights have low energy bulbs and maybe buy solar lights and solar PIR detector lights for outside security.

Even in the UK we have noticed a marked difference!

nige..I assume you have a fairly new swich box(consumer unit).Leave your main switch ON,switch OFF all the other trips. Then switch one on check if your meter is reading,if no reading switchthat one OFF again.Go through each one following the same proceedure and see which one causes your meter to register.I did this on mine and found I had a duff switch on the board.Nothing to loose by trying it Nige...
