Over the last couple of weeks we have noticed a strange noise coming from our small wood pile, it sounds like a ticking noise. Not being very brave we do not want to poke around in it, but are concerned as we have 2 small yorkshire terriers and do not want them to get bitten. At present they can not get too close to it.

Does any one have any suggestions of what could be causing this noise.

When we had the same problem a couple of years, we decided to "biet the bullet" and armed with sticks and thick leather gardening gloves, we broke the wood pile down. The wood was full of beetly looking things that scattered everywhere and some of the logs were eaten away inside.

We have this every year, in varying degrees. I explored one hole in the log, carefully uncovering the passageway until I reached the "grub". It was a caterpillar like thing about the thickness of a pencil and 2 cm long with a black spot at one end and it was eating through the log making a ticking sound as it scraped the wood at the end of its tunnel. In our wood pile we have about 10 of the things and they do make a bit of a mess, but the logs burn well !
