What would you have them investigate?

Fantasy I appreciate but, please bare with me, let's just assume that they were from the Times, Telegraph, ex News of the World etc. Had the resources and couldn't be frightened off.

1. The various housing scams in progress, and the inadequate laws surrounding them.

2. The slump in the tourism industry.

3. Why the government is apathetic about the above.

They could investigate why there is no freedom of the press? i doubt there would be an editor here who would allow the results of the investigations to be published.

The majority of VICTIMS are frightened to speak up here so how would they get their evidence?

Hector, I'm not surprised. NCFP have been waiting two years for people to expose the scams that we believe are going on but very few come forward. We know that at least 250 problems were reported to the PCO but it looks as if they've been solved.

They would have to investigate BOTH sides and not just one.

They would have to cross-check information to ensure what they were writing is correct

They would have to check the information they were given with relevant documentation etc

They would have to take a balanced view

They would not be able to suck up to one side because of the status of the Parties involved

I read these articles which is why I sold my property in the UK - I do not have any assets which can be claimed by a Greek Cypriot.

I decided to totally to developing a life in TRNC because we love the area, and the people.

It was not a case of money either as we come from the North East of England and I sold my house for less that the cost of buying here so did not come with bags of money to spare.

Msg9 Malsancak.

We battle on, but posting on CY44 raised a lot of misinformation. It is a public Forum.

NO We will still not give in to builders blackmail, and YES we continue to follow due process.

As promised we will post chapter and verse, if and when it is all resolved.

ISTANBUL (Hurriyet Daily News)—Turkey has more journalists in prison than any other country in the world, including China and Iran, according to a press release issued Monday by the International Press Institute.

Healthy journalism is impossible in countries where newspapers are owned by/dominated by/related to political parties*. The content of a newspaper should be the intellectual property of the journalists - owners must only have commercial influence.

If these thumbnail rules do not apply in certain countries... then the original question in this thread (though interesting) is daydreaming.

* How is the situation in (y)our native country?

I have been interviewed by Cyprus Today regarding the problems with our house. They also interviewed Hasan Sungur - Nothing appeared in the newspaper.

I spoke to a member of staff from Cypurs Star and they were suppose to be following it up - THEY DID NOT.

Going back to the investigation side of this thread, what about an investigation into the now defunct Property Complaints Office?

@ msg 19, HildySmith: During 30 odd years in journalism for one of the big and influential Dutch newspapers I've never ever given interviewed people the slightest guarantee that his/her story would be published.

There are many reasons why stories are published later or not published at all.

Was the story convincing from both sides? Was more research necessary? Etc. Not for you to judge.

If you invited Cyprus Today to pay attention to your case - you can't complain about a non-published story, unless you were promised a publication date (which would qualify the reporter as stupid and incapable).

If Cyprus Today approached you for an interview, than you have a good reason to ask (demand) about the decision not to publish the interview.

If the latter should be the case - please let us all know the text of the email you may receive.

Can anyone on Cy44 tell us who are the actual owners of the English-speaking newspapers here in the TRNC:

Cyprus Observer

Cyprus Star

Cyprus Today

and, what relationships they have with the 'elite few' in power here?

Cyprus Observer is totally dead now and was owned byh Free Birds and run by hasan Ercaikica who was spokesperson for Talat. It subsequently got sold to GAU, and died.

Cyprus Star is part of Ali Osman Safa's Media Group (as well as MedView Homes etc)

Cyprus Today has Mr Nadir at the backj of it.

Does that answer your question Tom Steel

Msg 25 - thank you for that Marion, but only half of my query in Msg 23 was answered. The relationship part of the original question is equally important, as this might just have a bearing on what subjects journalists might be able to investigate, the likelihood of their findings actually being published and what punitive action owners would take on the editors/reporters for doing so. Just a thought!

@ msg 27, tomsteel: (...) and what punitive action owners would take on the editors/reporters for doing so. Just a thought! (...)

▶ What would happen in TRNC? The same as in the UK nowadays: the senior editor and the reporter will be sacked. Does the name Murdoch ring a bell? Again: owners (a private person, a political party etc) should NOT have any influence regarding the journalistic content of the newspaper. In the end journalists must only be obliged to answer questions from an independent board with respected members from outside the newspaper.

Hector Msg 20

That is an excellent idea I think a lot of people would be interested it that - I personally think it was a scam like all the others = put it in the hands of someone who can 'talk the talk' but not 'walk the walk'

Investigate those who bring 'pets' to a small island already overcrowded with them ...and then dump their offspring (the pet's that is)

I brought my 11 year old pet with me and I acquired 2 street dogs (both Pointers-Hunting dogs) I took them off the streets into my home. They did have offspring someone dumped Sally in an empty house in Lapta. someone dumped Bella in the garden of a empty house (they were seen by a neighbour who objected so they drove into the garden of the empty house and dumped them.

KAR took both dogs in, rehomed the pups and speyed the dogs.Sally my street dog raised over 100tl plus £'s Plus Euro's for KAR on the Chateau Market in 2 hours doing obedience routines.

I have spent today at the KAR center with a dog which could not be re-homed as it would not walk on a leader. After 1 hour, that dog was walking on a leader and enjoying the walk.

So your (with all due respect) your 'general statement' about dog owners is incorrect. I also handed over 20tl to KAR today from a young man who I help to write a personal statement so he could apply for college in the UK. In addition to handing over £1

Message 27. Sorry Tom, but my omission was deliberate. As a journalist who has been writing for 5 years here, as they say in the classics 'I could not possibly comment.' Dutch crusaders comments are all valid.

If murdoch in a country of 60,million people can be castigated for his writings, what do you think woul,d happen in this gold fish bowl to the paper, the reporters etc. m uch stuff does not get published, not so much in order not to upset the powers that be, but also to protect the public, And as someone said earlier , the public frequently do not want their names in the press for fear it could adversely affect the outcome of their current 'fight'.

And of course, true investigative journalism reports truth - and that is not always easy to find!

I see Marion's posting is up to the same standard as the proofreading of the newspaper she reputably gets paid for writing articles in.

DC and Marion totally agree with your sentiment. However, what other mechanism is there for 'investigating' supposed wrong doing by those in power? Certainly, the police will not. As an expat it could be argued it has nothing to do with me as I am a visitor, but who speaks for the wronged TC. Who can represent expats when they have been seen off by corruption at all levels of property purchase, health et al and then publish so others may be warned? Rhetorical, so no reply needed but thanks for your thoughts.
