French President Nicolas Sarkozy has said allowing Greece into the eurozone in 2001 was a "mistake".

He said Greece was "not ready" at the time. But, he added, it could be rescued thanks to Wednesday's EU deal on the euro debt crisis.

In response, Greece's foreign minister told the BBC that Athens was not the source of the crisis, and that no country should be made a scapegoat.

The agreement reached in Brussels has triggered a worldwide shares rally.

In a TV interview on Thursday, Mr Sarkozy said admitting Greece to the eurozone had been "a mistake" because the country had "entered with false [economic] figures. It was not ready".

He added that he was confident the current Greek government would emerge from the crisis and that Wednesday's deal had averted a "catastrophe".

BBC

We shall see... if you discover a member of your club lied to gain entry, do you give him money because he's bankrupt and dragging you down...? I wouldn't. What an odd world we live in.

Only short term measure I'm afraid. 2012 will prove disastrous for the EU. They are already cap in hand to the Chinese!

Bill, I think the Argentinian finance minister described it as one big ponzi scheme. They loan the money they don't have to pay off the debts they cant meet.

How did we get in to such a mess, that the rich western nations are now indebted to countries whom we very recently described as poor? These nations are now buying up all the worlds commodities which will leave us powerless.

Italy looks to be in a real mess. It says it will be bring in reforms that will be gradually phased in i.e increasing the pension age. They don't seem to have realised that the issue is immediate. It doesn't help when their prime minister stays in a 4,500 dollar per night room at the conference. What message does this send out?

Did you see the way Berlusconi checked out the new Danish prime minister as she walked away from him. He had a good look at her rump. He just cant help himself

Every man and his dog in UK knew that the Greeks were taking the pith right from the time leading up to them joining the EU. Jokes regarding them being paid shed loads of money for millions of mountain goats which did not exist were bandied around for years. The French presumably knew this but kept quiet as they too from the off have been fiddling farm subsidies etc. To me this just illustrates that this insidious conglomeration was doomed from the start and the comment by ilovecyprus at message 3 is spot on. I do believe that Berlusconi should revert to selection by touch as he clearly needs new glasses if he fancies that particular piece of Danish bacon !

A big Texan hedge fund manager has put his money on France crashing. He says the French banks are in a real mess. Sarkozy is desperate for the Germans to recapitalise his banks.

By the way did anyone watch John Humphreys programme last night about the UK welfare state?

An Ecuadorian man (very lovely and sweet man) left his country to go to Spain. Spain gave him Spanish citizenship hence he became an EU citizen. Now somewhere along the line he decides to move to London with his family of six even though nobody speaks English.

He ends up in Islington. This borough has no social housing, so benefit claimants have to live in big four bedroom houses which are paid for by the state to private landlords. The UK government is paying 2,300 pounds per month for his rent and paying out other benefits, family credits etc.

Hats off to the guy though. At least he is out working as a cleaner.

Now the borough council says his family cant be moved elsewhere. I mean if the guy has travelled half way around the world to get to the UK, surely it is too much to move him to a neighbouring borough or even outside London which has social housing and cheaper.

Everybody is trying to save Greece except the Greeks themselves. They are opposing the austerity measures and going on strike which is making things even worse. The main trouble is that nobody wants to pay taxes and its a national sport to hide income as much as possible. Good luck to them. In the end they will bring EU down and I am going to shed crocodile tears.

Years ago my then father in law, from France who was in the French Finance Ministry extolled the virtues of the Euro, he argued that the UK should join and that as a 'big hitter' the UK would ensure that rules were in place and further that the UK would press very hard for then to be observed. I felt that we should join but only when it was running properly. I said that a joint bank account with my husband was bad enough, would you have a joint bank acount with Greece! (should have taken a bet).

When Italy was about to join it failed as its borrowings exceeded 3% of GDP. Ah said the Italians our economy is actually much bigger as 20% of the economy is black and if we include that our borrowings are under 3%. It worked they got in! That is what is wriong!

It can work but it requires the Northern European model, not Club Med.

Be careful

Certain people on the forum think the EU and the euro is marvellous.

Everyone knew the Geeks lied their way in but it didn't matter because the Germans are playing the long game.

Why try and win wars when you can get a fourth reich by stealth?
