Can I please make an appeal to anyone who is going to celebrate Halloween at a Resteraunt or Pub in a residential area -

Pease remember that there are those who do not like , or even approve, of this "festival" and w and may prefer a quiet night at home. If you car is parked or you pass under someone's windows or in front of someone's drive, show a little respect and do not shout and scream and rev engines.

And dont wake the dogs - if another noisy reveller starts a barking session and we get more obscene rants about dogs as a result , I wont be responsible for my actions.

And even more on bonfire night. Dogs are terrified of fireworks and the poor brutes who have noone to comfort them will be truamatised and no doubt there will be howling. I used to love fireworks, till I realised the effect they had on the poor animals and have to stay at home soothing mine and worrying about the strays.

I dont want to spoil anyone's fun, but if you are organising a fireworks display , could you not concentrate on a magnificent visual display rather than things that go bang in the night.

i think the fireworks are more of a problem in the uk than here, they start a month before and you hear them going off every night,i certainly dont miss it,i think the way its done here is so much better, its spread over the year and dosnt last for long usually at turkish weddings, but boy, they can put on some display

You need a permission in the T.R.N.C to let off fireworks.

When I bought fireworks (a big mistake because of the dogs)for a special occasion nine years ago, I not only had to get permission and go to Lefkoşa to a special shop but I had to pay someone who was licenced to let them off. Quite performance and not cheap, I thought they are used so much more often now that perhaps the rule had been relaxed. Whatever. If you have dogs do stay with them , and if you are feeding a stray but not normally housing it, perhaps you could let it in a shed or garage so at least it can hide!

Just out of interest, do cats react the same way?

I had a different problem with my dogs. They were trained gundogs and when fireworks went off they got overexcited because they thought it was shooting. They wanted to go and retrieve something.

But gundogs are no different to any dog when they are puppies - we used to acclimatise them to loud noises. You start with banging a tin with a spoon just before feeding, then bursting paper bags just before feeding. The loud noise then has pleasant connotations for them and they become completely immune - even if they weren't gundogs they would never have suffered on Bonfire Night.

My neighbours have hunting dogs and they appear to train them by making loud noises and shouting and letting off shotguns. It never seems to worry my dogs(actually I rather hoped it might accustom them) , but they are still afraid of thunder and fireworks. The worst is the one that was three years or so on the streets before I got her - perhaps she had a traumatic experience she literally just shivers while the bangs are going on. The spaniel cross is not so bad but edgy and comes for comfort - I have made no attempt to train him as a gun dog even if I knew how - I dont want the neighbours getting the idea he should go hunting!

I might try your idea with new puppy (I imagine they do something like that with guide dogs now I come to think of it ) but where would one get a supply of PAPER bags these days?!

I remember something in the UK about getting your dog used to noises....through recordings of whatever the noise maybe and play it constantly until they get used to it.
