THE Royal British Legion Kyrenia Branch in association with the British Residents Society are proud to announce that the Poppy Appeal for 2011 starts today (Saturday, October 29) and will run until Remembrance Sunday on November 13.

Between the two organisations over 25 poppy collection boxes have been placed in bars, restaurants, St Andrews church and public meeting places from the Karpaz to Karşiyaka.

Your kind donation when purchasing a poppy will go towards the Poppy Appeal which is the British Legion's major fund-raising campaign. The Legion helps people of all ages, providing financial, social and emotional support to all those who have been affected by conflict. Beneficiaries range from children to widows, from single mothers to pensioners, in fact anyone who finds themselves in need of help. Some 9.5 million people are eligible to approach us for support.

Any queries regarding poppies should be addressed to Shelia Mawhinney, the Kyrenia Branch poppy appeals officer on

Scarlet poppies (popaver rhoeas) grow naturally in conditions of disturbed earth throughout Western Europe. The destruction brought by the Napoleonic wars of the early 19th Century transformed bare land into fields of blood red poppies, growing around the bodies of the fallen soldiers.

In late 1914, the fields of Northern France and Flanders were once again ripped open as the First World War raged through Europe’s heart.

The significance of the poppy as a lasting memorial symbol to the fallen was realised by the Canadian surgeon John McCrae in his poem ‘In Flanders Fields’.

The poppy came to represent the immeasurable sacrifice made by his comrades and quickly became a lasting memorial to those who died in the First World War and later conflicts.

During the 1920s the Royal British Legion began to organise an annual poppy day to be held on the anniversary of each armistice.

Veterans were employed to make and sell poppies, the proceeds from the sales then went to support wounded e

- wounded ex-servicemen and their families.

In addition the symbol of the poppy came to signify the public remembrance of the war and the war dead.

Now, poppies are used to signify the remembrance of all British war dead, and are a central part of the remembrance ceremonies at the Cenotaph and other memorial sites around the UK and abroad.

One way of keeping this of interest is for the ex servicemen and women to state who they served with and dates, be nice to see if any of our paths crossed.

I served with 59 Commando Royal Engineers though a member of the Army I always felt very much part of the Corps of Royal Marines. I served from 1976 - 1989 with a three year spell with UNIFICYP between 81 - 84. Look forward to seeing if any others who have served state who with and when.

To book your place either go to the RBL stall at the Lambousa Market tomorrow morning (Saturday, November 5) or phone the RBL hotline on - 0533 884 1517 or email the entertainments secretary at - events@rblkyrenia.com or visit the branch website at - http://www.rblkyrenia.com

Maybe next year as this year I have kindly been invited as part of the guard of honour at the Cenotaph, which I was honoured to accept. For me it will give me time to reflect on the 345 Fallen we have escorted from RAF Lyneham through Wootton Bassett between April 2007 and September 2011. May each and everyone of those RIP.

Jarra, your a good geeza!

Sure you never served with 9 Sqn!!

Everybody who attended the Cortege passing at Wootton Bassett deserves all the praise and thanks from a grateful nation. Shame it never happened before though.

I ask again to the ODDMAJOR - who is the Standard Bearer (only asked this about 3 times on this forum already)

The Standard (not a banner) will be paraded by Kim Tyler the nominated Standard Bearer for the RBL Kyrenia Branch.

And very smart he is too!

TAKEN FROM AN EARLIER POSTING... hope this answers your question Ang1706

Jarra, I served with 59 from 72-76, left in Aug 76, but will always remember my time with the Squadron and consider my time serving with the Commando Brigade the best time of my 22 years service.

Proud to have served in HM Forces. i wear my poppy with pride.

I have had messages from friends back in the UK saying that some buisnesses have banned workers from wearing poppys? i don't know how true this is, but if it is they should be ashamed.

Ang1706 Nagh mate, for me I wore the Green lid though obvioulsy many of my mates served with 9 sqn Characters such as Rob the Slob, Jim Doubtfire and Bob Matthews from the top of my head.

Decandydyl..... good man like you also without doubt 59 was the finest unit I served though I only did 14 years, I have been to a couple of Reunions but not for a few years now, prefer to go to the Army Navy Rugby as awsome event, though yet to see the pitch at Twickenham as see so many blast's from the past that fail each time to get to the match.

If you two lads are out there this time next year maybe catch up at the appropriate Service to show our respects.

it is with regret that I have to inform you that if the RBL Kyrenia Branch wish this thread to be made a 'sticky' the cost is £10 per day.

Unfortunately we cannot afford, nor justify, that kind of cost for advertising what is essentially a charity appeal.

As a branch we would prefer that the £10 per day to go to the Poppy Appeal.

Best

I just read you were involved in a hit and run incident, hope not to damaged and make a speedy recovery. I also note you mention your name Ged Jackson and trying to place you in 12 Sqn mind you I was only 18 then so a bit of a grey person in a new unit amongst many characters. Yes I did play football for the Regt back then and I was in one troop. Some characters from then Big lad called Chappie MT, Al Draper, Geordie Heslin, Dave Kirby, Chalkie White the two Dawson Brothers. Sgt Major was jake Townley? When we went to N. Ireland 79 I was at Eniskillen. I was also helped home or poured home on far too many occassions from the Winkle. Real long time ago but small world. Hi Jarra,

I know Rob the Slob very well, last I heard he was involved with the Gatwick Airport Security, also I did my P Coy with a SSGT Matthews in 1983 is that the same guy?

I was a Cpl and was no 13 and upto my number he was the only one who had passed, as for those who dont know, the numbers on P Coy are as per rank so highest officer is 1 then highest SNCO after and so forth.

Thank you CarrieRbag on message 16, Kim Tyler, yes I agree what a very smart and ideal candidate for Standaed Bearer, but why you have to reply to my post as I would never never call a Royal British Legion Standard a Banner!!!

Reference Message 39 - If you are referring to the Remembrance Sunday service at the Old British Cemetery in Kyrenia then there will be 35 wreath layers attending in total representing all 3 services and the Royal Marines, plus 10 of the Corps, 2 Cavalry units and 11 Infantry Regiments, all of whom took part in the Cyprus Emergency Campaign of 1955 - 59 in which 371 servicemen lost their lives on this tiny island.

The Royal British Legion, The British Residents Society, the British Cyprus Memorial Trust, the Police Service and the Turkish Cypriot Veterans will also be represented.

Oh and of course a wreath will be laid on behalf of the Queen by Lord Maginnis of Drumglass.

If anyone is thinking of attending the service it is advisable to be seated at 12.15pm at the latest as that is the time that the live commentary will commence.

The first 2 rows of chairs are reserved for the wreath layers and veterans from the UK but there will be 450 chairs laid out in total.

BigMart

I have many contacts with the RMA due to my past involvement with the Repatriations, Charlie Hobson was one of the points of contact.

I remember in Nov 2008 when Charlie phoned me to inform me that there would be 500 "Royal" lining the route from RAF Lyneham through Wootton Bassett to John Radcliffe Hospital. On this date we escorted two Royal Marines and a Ghurka Soldier, As we approached every roundabout, layby, junction or overbridge there they were showing the up most respect for the fallen.

When we completed that journey I phoned Charlie up to inform him what I witnessed, during that conversation he asked me were "Royal" present? I replied and told him that he had under estimated, there were hundreds more as the public joined them at each vigil point.

Everyone knows what took place at Wootton Bassett but the 46 mile route was always lined by many hundreds more each time we escorted the cortege started by the RMA

Awsome respect,,,, Awsome

may all 345 R

They joined for many reasons, to march, to sail, to fly, they went where they were posted but nobody joins to die. Their leaders talk on TV what else could we have done? But those leaders lost no daughters and none has lost a son. So here's to all our soldiers where ever they may be.....and here's to all their families, I raise a glass to thee......
