| Sir Jimmy Savile, the veteran DJ, charity fundraiser and eccentric, has died at his home in Leeds. He was 84. Police were called just after noon today to his home in Roundhay, where they found his body. It is not yet clear how he died, but his death is not being treated as suspicious. Savile, a wartime Bevin Boy who went on to rub shoulders with the royal family, started his lengthy broadcasting career as a DJ on Radio Luxembourg in 1958, joining BBC Radio 1 in 1968. He was the first presenter of Top of the Pops and went on to host Jim’ll Fix It, which for almost 20 years was a fixture of children’s Saturday teatime viewing. “He was a one-off - that’s the way he’ll be remembered, really - but in particular all that money he raised for charity,” said Tony Blackburn, the broadcaster and a former colleague.
