I know that their is a company selling South African Simonsvlei Wine in Girne, but is there anyone else selling South African Wines ??

We are considering supplying A very good quality range of South African Wines albeit on a small scale, would forum members buy directly from us, to stock their fridges etc. South African wine is one of my passions, and we would like to pass the passion on and at the same time make a small profit.

Any advise is greatly appreciated.

i have not tried any south African wines so i cant really give any input, I know we went through the Chile and Australian ones and they were good.

If you can get any Californian wines, you cant go wrong,, they did beat France in the last wine tasting. Napa Valley, the best in the world.

The cheapest Californian is better than anything from most parts of the world and if you're lucky enough to find some from Napa Valley, name your price..

As far as stocking "fridges" I will bite my tongue on that line.

Maybe you should have a tasting night in Sams bar or another locale on the west side for starters, he would be most accommodating if you talked to him.

Please keep us informed how the S.A wines go. Good luck.

Weary,

Or should we call you "be wary"...

You may well draw unfriendly attention from the authorities and end up being asked to leave the island if you are not very careful in how you do this..

Competing with the established businesses here is not easy... you may well set up a seccessful venture but at quite some cost in capital outlay... but that's when your problems start... not end.

If others see that you have found a niche market they will simply copy and undercut you.. ergo your business becomes somebody else's. This happens all too frequently here... so by all means go ahead but do your homework.

For a starter. don't assume that these wines are not already available here.

Groucho,

Thanks for your advise, I take onboard all you say. Last time we were there in August, we could get some decent Australian wine at Iceland for around 18YTL per bottle. Apart from finding Simonsvlei Boxed wine for 30YTL (5 litre box) which is pretty awful stuff...there was not a lot else. You can get some Bellingham and Two Oceans South African Wines in the South, but that's about it really. Unless you know of other outlets that sell quality new world wines ??

We were thinking of bringing in maybe 80 cases (6 per case) to see how it goes......and then have a look at it again. If it was not to sell to friends and others, we would just drink it ourselves.

Cheers

I'm sure if you had 80 cases of wine,

one thing's for sure,

you would not be short of friends,

to help you drink it.

Good luck

I found them......www.capewines.net

In my personal opinion the Simonsvlei wine is not the best, it's not the worst either......give the Boxed White a miss, however, the Sauvignon Blanc is palatable as long as it is chilled....very chilled !!!

Not a bad tipple to have with some Meze, salad and grilled Haloumi on your Balcony or Terrace.......try it !! you might be amazed.

We in Cyprus in a couple of weeks.......what's the weather like ????

looks like a quick trip over the border for a splurge on SA wine for the Xmas Table then....and yeah I know, there's a limit to what you can bring back, but it's worth a chance.

Wind, Rain, I can't wait.......beats the 34 deg and 90% Humidity here in Singapore !!

i would be a bit dubious at the moment about importing wines into the north, why not wait until the island is one & take it from there..................

Suzanne, the wine will be 'off' by then!

I have yet to be impressed by South African wines and have often been disappointed with recommendations in that I no longer purchase any. I prefer many of the wines from Chile and of course Australia have nice reds and New Zealand Whites can be special.

Hi wearytravellers,

There is a wine shop next to the Supreme Supermarket. Last time I was in I noticed that they had a good selection of South African Wines.

For those interested in red wines there are some good wines being imported from the Thrace region of Turkey (Marmaris) and a particular favourite of mine is Melen Merlot of 2003 vintage. The only probem I have found is quality consistency. No one bottle tastes the same as the next but at its best it is superb and at its worst it is good. Expect to pay around 12Tl for a bottle and I buy mine from the Dolmaci store in Alsancak.

I am also a great fan of Chilean reds when I can find them.

They have a very goodCabernetSauvignon2007 by s pringvalley of the Western CApe at 14% vol which I can recomend. areally nice smooth fruity wine and easy on the pallet. In UK retailing at their stores for the silly price of £2.98p and they are also selling a very nice Chilean Red Cabernet for the same silly price, exellent wine for the price, well it is according to my pallet and her indoors is partial to a bottle or two in the evening...

I've tasted some absolutely beautiful Argentinian red wines. Worth a try.
