That looks a very vibrant market! It is almost up to the standard of the "original", at Famagusta.

Nice pictures - the size that some of the fruit and vegetables get to amazes me. I have taken some photographs at the market before and it always gets people talking when they see the colours and variety of

produce for sale.

Market was really clean and tidy this time.

The size of the fruit and veg was not as bad as before...

I am not sure if the farmers are checked

for the inappropriate use of the chemicals.

A good info about the plant in picture 11 is here.

Originally from Asia. Some locals think that it is an endemic plant.

It can be cooked exactly the same as a spud )

Tastes slightly nicer.

Peel the skin off, chop as you do with the potatoes, deep fry

or cook it with chicken in a pot (with green peas, carrots etc)

I don't eat too often because it is a good source of starch )

Msg.11: These are the Kolokas root vegetables. In my childhood I used to worry when I smelled Kolokas with lamb on arriving home from school I hated it as it had a slightly glutenous texture and as a child this was not something I enjoyed as a texture.

However, I would now like to try and grow some in the UK in a polytunnel (a bit perverse I suppose by I am willing to try them again after 35 years ). As to whether they will grow in the UK - no idea.

do they sell tobacco at the market, like they do in Turkey, I used to buy it by the kilo for around 30 lira, and it was really good tobacco, you can't buy tobacco in any shops in Turkey, and to try and get your hands on any rolly papers forget it, if you do find any they want an arm and a leg for a pack, hope it's not the same in North Cyprus, as I only smoke tobacco.

No tobacco in the market at all.

But listen to this! Tobacco used to be farmed in

Karpaz area until recently...10 years or may

be five years ago ,you could see them entering

Yeni Erenköy.I ASSUME there must be some

farmers ,still growing their own tobacco.(tütün in Turkish).

Factory is still standing on the left side of the road.

Kolokas grows in England.

Harman, 2000, 2001 are all made with local produced tobacco, which is still grown in the Karpas.

In the mountains of eastern Turkey ( Batman, Sason ) they grow tobacco for most of the US brands.

Sorry for changing the subjuct, ref the Market.
