I saw a boy marching, with medals on his chest, He marched alongside Soldiers, marching six abreast, He knew it was Remembrance Day, he walked along with pride, And did his best to keep in step with the soldiers by his side. And when the march was over the boy looked rather tired. A soldier said. "Whose medals son?" to which the boy replied,, ... ... "They belong to my Dad, but he didn't come back. He died out in Afghanistan , up on a Helmand Track". The boy looked rather sad, and a tear came to his eye, But the soldier said, "Don't worry son, I'll tell you why," He said, "Your dad marched with us today, all the bloomin way, All us soldiers knew he was here, it's like that on Remembrance Day." The boy looked rather puzzled, he didn't understand But the soldier went on talking, and started to wave his hand, "For this great land we live in, there's a price we have to pay, To keep our Country free, and fly our flag today. Yes we all love fun and merriment in this country where we li

But the price was that some soldier, his precious life must give, For you to go to school, my son, and worship God at will. Somebody had to pay the price, so our soldiers paid the bill. Your dad died for us my son, for all things good and true. And I hope you can understand these words, that i have said to you". The boy looked up at the soldier and after a little while, His face changed expression, and he said with a beautiful smile, "I know my dad marched here today, this our Remembrance Day, I know he did, I know he did, all the bloomin way. RIP. FOR WHO HAVE PAID THE ULTIMATE SACRIFICE

Very moving. So relieved that our youngest survived his two tours of duty in Afghanistan, we know many parents are not as lucky. Thinking especially of his close friend, a young man called Zac, who was killed on his second week in Afghanistan. R.I.P. Zachery and all those young people killed in conflicts around the world.

Thank you for that Hans. Some of us are familiar with the text, but I for one have only ever heard it read aloud and didn't know the source. Probably I should have googled it to find out myself earlier. Thank you for sharing the poem R.C.T. Man, so appropriate as Remembrance Sunday approaches.

| Thanks for the poem I too think of my nephew serving his second time in Afghanistan and the new just the other day of 12 killed worried us all the more..God bless the all. If we are to reach real peace in this world and if we are to carry on a real war against war, we shall have to begin with children; and if they will grow up in their natural innocence, we won't have to struggle; we won't have to pass fruitless idle resolutions, but we shall go from love to love and peace to peace, until at last all the corners of the world are covered with that peace and love for which consciously or unconsciously the whole world is hungering."..... | Thank you for the poem R.T.C. So very moving and I appreciate you taking the time to post it on here. God help and keep the people serving in Afganistan. I have several friends whose sons and daughters are there and I really don't know how they cope with the constant worry. Their theory is that 'It was their choice to serve in the army' .... DC You once again show your true colours. Why does it matter that R.T.C didn't mention the source of the poem? The sentiment remains the same, so why you feel the need to be pedantic about it defeats me. |

DC, This topic is very important to some of us who have had (and still have relations and friends) serving in ALL the wars this and the last century. Some, like myself still weep for those that we lost. So please respect our views I'd say please back off on this. Rememberance Day means a lot to us. Then we won't mention that the Dutch hoped to remain neuteral and who had to come to stop them starving....? You are old enough to remember that.

Hans, I am not sure if you remember or wish to even try but approximately 3 years ago I agreed to a truce with you based on the fact that I was extremely offended by your anti military comments, I am an ex service member and I can specifically recall your comments about soldiers who died in recent conflicts being silly for not telling their superiors that they were not willing to fight other countries battles. I would urge you to remember when you make such comments and then abuse others who are doing a similar thing, it destroys your credibility on such matters.

| I am with you As I imagine what you are doing, I feel you by my side, like the morning when you left me, I wish I'd never cried, for your shoulders were heavy with guilt and lots of sadness too, Last words echoed inside my head of "I'll be coming home to you". And there your kiss left mine until some distant day, to be your last (you promised) that you shall never go away. So I sit here looking out, on to fields so green, whilst you have only dessert and views you will have only seen. But rest assured I am with you, deep inside your heart, I would always be your strength and angel, you knew that from the start. To guide you through your dark days and help you with your thoughts and have the loving memories that never can be bought. You are with me every second; I hope you feel that too, because when I go to bed at night, all I feel is you. | Reality in Afghanistan My pain feels cold and selfish My anguish very small My reality insignificant Compared to ones that fall Young men with broken bodies Their Comrades lie in sacks Devastated parents Their sons will not come back. My pain will ease and lessen My anguish slip away Reality in Afghanistan Two brave men died today Young men with shell shocked faces Growing old before their time Are living breathing testament To this shallow pain of mine. | For any members who have served, have family members who have served or who are still serving, I know that you will understand the lyrics to this tune even though it is an old song and not related to modern conflicts. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xGZQRZ7ZZFw I can honestly say that I am brought to tears every time I listen to this song for many reasons and when you reach about 4 minutes and 25 seconds into the song you might realise why we get so offended by the politically correct types who think it is an easy choice to say, why fight just because someone tells me too, being a member of the forces is a life choice, we know this because so many wonderful young people have had to pay with their lives to show what they will fight for. The most profound words have already been stated but I think they should be repeated every day of the year, not just when it suits the politically correct. WE WILL REMEMBER THEM. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LlYtlyFSTlU |

Hans, I'm still working on "Internet media remain the intellectual property of the holder of the copyright. Not indefinite, but usually in the Western world for about (+/-) 100 years" I can see how it could last for plus a hundred years but not minus a hundred years..... As it happens I tend to side with Hans on the point he makes about quoting somebody else's artistic work without attribution, as it seems as though it's an attempt to pass the work off as your own, which is not really right, is it? When it's a bit of light humour it's acceptable because to do otherwise would often lessen the effectiveness of the joke... i.e. you don't follow every tale with chapter and verse as to its origin. In this case however it would have been best to put the originator of the poem or at least say 'I don't know who first penned this but I think it's rather good'.

For your information it was sent to me from a very good friend who @ this moment is in hospital upon his return from Afghanistan. Thank you. |

I think most of us knew that R.C.T. Man was posting a known poem. Many of us will have heard it before. I thank you once again for sharing it with us, R.C.T. Man. We were so relieved when our son was brought twice into Cyprus on R&R and debriefing, after his tours in Afghan. We were given special passes to see him on base at Episkopi and at Tunnel beach. A joyful time for us. We felt so privileged to be amongst all those brave young people. Sadly the next week one of the next group at Tunnel Beach was killed on R&R by a speedboat. A tragic accident after surviving the war. I cannot begin to feel the pain his parents felt. From the elation and joy of him saying on the phone, "Hi Mum, I am safely in Cyprus." The great relief and then the next awful phone call. May their God bless them all; the dead and injured from all wars. Oh that in this third millennium man would cease his inhumanity to man.

I would just like to point out that DC and Phil have the right to say what they think. They have that right because countless men and woman have laid down their lives to give them the right of free speech. Of course others have the right of free speech but I would ask DC and Phil to remember , had it not been for all those men and women through the years and those serving now and are willing to serve in the future, then perhaps Hitler or Stalin or some other dictator would have ensured that we all kept our mouths shut.

Big Mart, Yes Michael Willetts GC was a truly brave man. He saved the lives of children from a Terrorist Bomb in Andytown Belfast, and lost his life in the process. There is a plaque on the wall of the bock of flats and there are I beleive movements to erect a memorial- that in itselfe shows how well respected the action was greeted by a very Republican area. He was awarded the GC not the VC because he was looking after the well being of civilians and not military. Amazing that the last Government changed the rules regarding Honours and Awards, now he would have got at least the VC. Just to stick in your craw though BigMart - he was a Paratrooper from the Third Battalion!!

ang1706. you can, and always could, only get a VC when committing an act of conspicuous valour when acting in the active presence of the enemy. So I don't think it's to do with changes in the awards criteria.

Angus, I think the reason he didn't get the VC was because it wasn't a 'war', it was 'peace keeping'. I won't hold it against him that he was a little misguided and joined the paras. I've seen his grave many times and did know what regiment he served with, just don't like to mention it. see you for a few wets later this month. Martin. Per Mare Per terram
