On another posting re dog poisoning, I offered to create a petition against the use of poison and to present it to the appropriate authorities. I appreciate that this may or may not have any affect but at least we are actually doing something proactive in this respect. Therefore, 1) how many of you would support me on this issue and 2) would be willing to assist me in doing so.

If I receive a flurry of negative replies then there is little point in my proceeding.

Do you seriously expect that a petition would make a dot of difference here?

Complete waste of time - in my personal opinion.

But good luck anyway.

Please contact the KAR office and you will see just how much work they have done on this. Endless pictures of the KAR Exec. visiting numerous Government offices over the years. Pages of information in the papers and pictures a few weeks back of packets of poison. Government Officials have ensured everything would be done and have given all the promises under the sun. Even visiting the KAR rescue centre themselves Petitions have been signed both on Web site and physically. This has been going on for years and NO-ONE, NOWHERE TAKES THE SLIGHTEST BIT OF NOTICE.

I do wish you luck and let's face it, you could the one person they do take notice off. But I think you'll find the Government is more interested in inventing more ways to milk the Cash Cow.

I would support you, but it has been done before, and nothing happens to change this barbaric practise.

Sorry to be negative.

Do an on-line petition accompanied by some photo's of animals that have been poisoned - this can be sent to everyone you know or people in other places concerned with animal welfare, as well as people that are here, and it should raise a much wider scope of awareness to the problem.

Just my thoughts of course - you could try this http://www.petitiononline.com/petitions/new or this http://www.ipetitions.com/

Hope this helps,

G

Even though it's been done before I think it's a good idea, just because something doesn't stop happening it doesn't mean people should stop trying.

Count us in.

Good for you wm. Doing something instead of moaning! The more dirctions it comes from the better. Constant dripping wears away a stone.

I will sign a petition (provided it is politely worded) and help if I can - but I am not very mobile these days and since because of the poisoning problem my dogs are kept indoors whenI am absent, cant leave home for more than 4 hours!

If you are going to be fair, is there anywhere to post suppoprt, for the poisining, that is.

There's a little yappy dog that lives on the balcony of a first floor apartmemt opposite me. Four friends were going back to UK today, as they got in the "taxi" as one they answered my question, "When are you coming back?" Won't be long, just hope you can shut FLUFFY up before we do"

Poison, gimme some.

erm, that didn't sound right, think I'll get me own.

Sorry, sylvia. KAR presented a petition and at the same time there was a Malatya one - oh must be four years ago. Maybe instead of putting extra energy in, the old petitions could be dug up and new names added and then presented to the government. We all want the law changed, but the government is so busy with other things, that all the promises made to KAR were unable to be fulfilled. The main request was for the contorl of the sale of poisons, particularly Lenate which is illegal (but brought in from Turkehy).

Maybe another attack would be good, but what does everyone else feel. I honestly feel that KAR should be at the front of this, and that their opinion is a very valid one.

Personally i dare NOT let my dog out of the house, or go walkabouts off the lead o no wonder she is getting fat , but she is ALIVE.

ideas???? By the way, I made mentionof this in my Musings in the Star this week. comments on that appreciated.(Out Friday)

Marion: voice of reason and experience as always!

Again you have said what I was thinking - the Govt. does have a few other things on its mind!

I doubt they would take much notice of a rehash of an old petition. I stand by the constant dripping on a stone theory and think the more directions the attack comes fromthebetter. Ideally we should all l write individually

and inundate them with letters, but that would be impractical,

Yes my dogs only get a run when a kind friend can accompany me (only one prepared to hlep out of all the dog loving Brits living here says something!) and even then one dog has to be on the lead , because it is impossible for one person to watch three, And that is rare because I have to travel so far to find somewher suiable for dogs. And my garden is turning into a prison yard.

On the whole there seems to be a fairly positive response, therefore within the next few days I will look into setting up a petition, and if I can will create one on line one. I would be happy for anyone to email me at s_m_wredden@hotmail.com with their support and can use this as part of a petition. Many thanks to those of you that have been supportive. I am sure KAR have done a very good job but it doesn't hurt to have more concerns voiced.

Marion, also thanks for suggesting an article for your column, a good idea I think if we can give the whole issue a high profile. I am happy to give some input to this if you want to email me.

Remember, if you stop poison, you will see the return of the gun, KAR managed to have this practice stopped, you cannot have it both ways, the animals will be culled by the locals one way or the other.

To stop the expats dogs being poisoned they should first be confined to the grounds of the house, and if taken for a walk should have a mussel fitted as advised by many of the vets in the TRNC.

May be wise words, John, but what happened to the freedom in paradise? And sadly one has heard of dogs being poisoned in their own back yards as poisoned meat has been thrown over the fence. Maybe my dog is lucky in that she has a roof to run around - they can't get the stuff up there. Just all seems so sad, and it is high time that we moved on somehow.

at least a gun is more noticeable and can be reported to the police and offenders could be punished .

Viscious circle, but one that has to be broken somehow, somewhere.

I have just bought an apartment at SeaTerra Reserve to use 3/4 times a year before retiring and am finding it hard to understand the barbaric practices involving animals in NC. Whilst stationed at Nicosia early 70's I know they did winter round ups but am horrified to read that 40 years on things haven't changed much.

I will definitely support your petition.

Shooting (provided to kill by a trained marksman) is probably less painful and certainly quicker than poison.

There are two types of poisoning;

1. Been happening for a long time. Poison is aimed at all predators not especially dogs by ignorant people preserving their livelihood and usually restricted to area of crops and livestock, and perhaps food premises which attract rats. Usually baited by cheap food such as bread or pasta

2. Aimed at domestic pets, in residential areas , even thrown into gardens! Usually baited by expensive meat , even supermarket packs (vide local vet). Prevalent since post Annan Brutish (oops sorry, freudian slip) invasion.

Making poison harder to obtain wont stop it (too many "legitimate" products contain harmful sustances read Agatha Christie!) but it may reduce it and send a message.

I would support this, people say this one has tried and that one has tried to no avail, but one day

someone will take notice, so you must keep trying to show them that you mean it.
