The United Nations Human Development Index 2011 ranked 187 countries, based on three areas of human development: life expectancy, education, and the standard of living based on average income. Britain came 28th - two places down from last year - being overtaken by the Czech Republic and Singapore and just one place above debt-ridden Greece. At the top of the list was Norway, for the second year running, followed by Australia, the Netherlands, America, and New Zealand. At the bottom - The Democratic Republic of Congo.

Whatever they claim - England is still the most civilised country in the world and whilst it has its problems - caused by politicians - usually right wing - I would stack it up against any other country ! And I'm not even English!!!

I am very surprised to see the United States in 4th place. It was recently noted that it has the most recorded child deaths from parental abuse in the Western world. I cant believe it is higher than Switzerland when Zurich and Geneva often come out as the two cities with the highest standard of living in the world. Still looking good for the UK and Cyprus. Both countries scored in the Very high bracket of human development. Its probably why thousands of immigrants risk life and limb to flock to Britains shores every year.

How scientific is the survey? Given the UK obsession with griping, how many responses should have been taken seriously? 'I do not believe it! OFITG

Surveys are just a collection of info, with questions being answered to what the survey maker wants to hear. They are not for real and should never be taken seriously.

Re: Msg 15, Groucho, if you read the link, you'll see it is not a survey, where the members of the public give answers, or a phone-in a la X Factor, it is extrapolation of statistical data by the independent body under the UN Development Programme. Sorry that you don't like the results.

Ref Cyprus' position. Is that north or south or both, did expats views/stats get queried/included et al? "Statistics = damn lies", unquote.

So it was a phone in survey. Maybe that sums it up cos only a certian sort of person joins phone ins. If i surveyed my friends in the Uk they would say, they would rather be anywhere than the UK right now, 100% of them. None are happy far from it.

People will always moan and groan regards where they are living... But I have to agree with post 12 and say that Great Britain is probably one of the most civilised nations in the world..

Sorry, but listening to the constant slagging off of Europe on this BB, I thought the UK was the greatest place on earth. And Blade ,having stayed in many places throughout the world and thinking mainly outside Europe ,your friends ''If i surveyed my friends in the Uk they would say, they would rather be anywhere than the UK right now, 100% of them'' I think are making a statement for effect ,knowing they will never have to actually stay in those countries. Try Nigeria for a start ,a right bunch of laughs. or getting 'interviewed ' by the police in some mid east country.

Can't see the point of such a list as it all depends on what you want from the country you live in, and there are so many differences on what people like. Personally, I enjoy living in my birthplace, SCotland, for many reasons, but also staying in N.Cyprus which is different in many ways. Think one can have the best of both worlds but it would be different for each person. Worst places for me would be - Saudi Arabia, Nigeria, Iran but just been told by an Iranian woman in Istanbul that Iran is `wonderful`

msge 22 'Iran is `wonderful" I was once told by a Pakistani who had travelled extensively across the Middle east and beyond that Iran is the most beautiful country in the world.
