President Derviş Eroğlu has stressed that the Cyprus Turkish Side will fully seize the opportunity at the Cyprus negotiations until the fifth tripartite summit in January in New York, in order to achieve a good level of progress towards a solution to the Cyprus problem.

In a press conference held at the Turkish House in New York, the President underlined the need for making mutual efforts towards a settlement and said both sides should work at their best in order to fill in the gaps.

President Derviş Eroğlu told the press conference that progress was achieved during the Greentree-New York summit.

Defining the summit as successful, he said the Cyprus Turkish Side was happy to observe the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon’s peaceful efforts.

“Compared to July’s Geneva meeting, the Greentree summit has brought more concrete outcomes. There has been some encouraging progress. The UN has assigned a 2-month period and we will do our best to successfully seize this period” the President said.

Eroğlu stated that the Cyprus Turkish Side aims to enter the final stage of the solution process as from January.

He also welcomed Ban’s statement which referred to the “end game” in the Cyprus talks.

President Eroğlu went on saying that the ongoing oil drilling activities in the Mediterranean should be an accelerating force in the negotiations process.

Noting that the Cyprus Turkish side has presented bridging proposals on the core issues of the Cyprus problem, Eroğlu underlined the need for the Greek Cypriot Side to adopt a similar flexible approach at the talks.

“The give-and-take process was launched in Cyprus after we took up all chapters of the Cyprus talks. We finalized the chapter of Economy and the police issue under the internal aspects of security. We are working towards setting a date for a referendum” he said.

Meanwhile, President Eroğlu and his delegation are expected to return to the TRNC late this evening.

So, if a referendum result favoured TC/GC reconciliation - who is going to fund the TC civil service?

The EU, or RoC?

I think not!

Turkey has got this place 'by the short and curlies' - and Turkey knows it and will be going nowhere anytime soon!

The two sides might, possibly, come to an oil pipeline and water deal in exchange for a percentage of RoC's share of any gas revenue - but that's all still 'pie in the sky'!

So much for a Cyprus settlement!

Whether Turkey calls the shots or not, his New York trip seems to have been worthwhile.
