Sat down to watch The Good Shepherd at 5pm and what with stoking the fire, opening a bottle of red, etc, etc,it is now 8.50pm and the damn DVD has stuck right at the crucial part. We have tried in two different players and it refuses to play ball!! I am so annoyed I want to scream.

Thank you for listening, I feel better now.

Jo

To be honest it really isn't cold at all but we've been in the garden all day and hubby cut up lots of wood and you know when you fancy a cosy down with a bottle of wine and a DVD well that's what we did. Now sweating like a pig with all the doors open!!

The indent could be causing it. But there might be some dirt or a fingerprint on the DVDit that is the real culprit, and that is easy to fix.

Clean it with some windex or other glass type cleaner. Wipe from the centre outwards, never wipe it in a circular motion. Be sure it is totally dry before putting it back in the player.

You should be able to polish out scratches with toothpaste... it also works on glass in watches that have got scratched...

Toothpaste is very mildly abrasive... Eucryl tooth powder more so but the idea is to gently remove the scratches causing problems...

Well it's worth a go as the DVD won't play as it is....

Doyen,

The gel ones will be less effective/uselss.. i.e. it would take longer or not work at all I guess as the gel is not really a paste and therefore does not have the gentle abrasion you are after...

I think getting hold of an old scratched CD that no longer plays and experimenting with that until you find a paste or powder that works is probably the best idea... but as the DVD is already knackered I guess it's worth a try anyway.

I was shown how to rejuvenate a watch glass over 20 years ago and it really does work... it takes time and patience.

Of course you need to be able to see the blemish and if none is visible then this won't be the solution...

If the jumping is near the start of the film then it will be the inner area and likewise if it's near the end then it will towards the outer edge of the recorded surface which can usually be seen by tilting the DVD/CD in the light to see the extent of the recorded area of the disc used....

As all DVD's bought here are copies you do get some that will not play. We always take them back to where we got them and ask for another copy.

Ironically the DVD's here usually play better on cheap model players. Buy the £200 model and they are so sensitive they pick up all the imperfections in the disc and may not play it.

So leave the top of the range model in UK when you come and by the £9.99 model from ASDA.

I always purchased my DVD's at the shop by the roundabout in Girne on the main road a couple of hundred yards before the Jasmine. Practically opposite 'Colours Bar'. He's a very helpful guy and I've never had a bad copy.

We bought a (relatively) expensive surround sound DVD player here and then found it wouldn't play copies so have recently got a friend to bring a cheapy one with her. Last night's DVD performed the same in both players. Some other films have played ok in the expensive one and others better in the cheap one. We bought the new James Bond film the other day and I had to switch machines half way through but when my husband watched it the next day it played perfectly all the way through. Does anyone know why this happens?

some disc's i have done on my computer, won't run on my friends turkish player.

had a prob with her camera card in my vaio as well.

lots of the stuff purchased in turkey, i think is not compatable.

we usually get our dvd's from suze videao in lefkosa, no problems there.
