On this day, 18 years ago !!! Margaret Thatcher formally tendered her resignation to the Queen in the early hours of the morning. " We're leaving Downing Street for the last time after eleven-and-a half years and we're happy to leave the UK in a very much better state than when we came here" Can she come back please !?!?

No1Doyen, She really was fond of that Royal 'We', wasn't she? I was never a big fan of her policies, but I would never criticise her style of Government - if you're elected to the job, you go ahead and do what you believe in, none of this 'Government by Consensus' rubbish. Sad to hear that she is now suffering from Altzheimer's

There's no one left Nige. Bring back Maggie - she can still do a great Job for us. I can just pictuire her now walking up Downing Street singing these word's There'll always be an England While there's a country lane, Wherever there's a cottage small Beside a field of grain. There'll always be an England While there's a busy street, Wherever there's a turning wheel, A million marching feet.

Earlier this month Gordon Brown saved the world from financial meltdown and communities throughout the free world (except those expats in Northern Cyprus) have given praise and thanks for his being. Even those places that are not so free(Iran, North Korea) have begrudgingly accepted him as a saviour and a king among kings. Gordon may not be too good at running blighty but give him the big picture and all your problems are solved. ps. you can still get 5 to 2 on Labour winning the next election so fill your boots.

On this day: 28 November "1291: Edward I's wife, Eleanor of Castile, dies. Crosses are erected where her body rests on the way to London. " Can anyone confirm the site of the final Eleanors Cross in Central London? (some say it is where all 'mileages' from London are calculated) p.s. oops,... should probably be on the 11+ thread! Rob

It is I believe Charing Cross which is now the official centre for road distances in England. Streets within a six-mile radius are included in taxi driver training known as the Knowledge. St. Pauls in London is the central point from which the radial road numbering in England is based. Paul

Gordon Brown made such a good job of running the UK economy (into the ground), that it is now widely accepted that the recession will be deeper and longer in the UK than anywhere else in the world. What a star!!

Sorry chaps! It's not Charing Cross. Oooerrr! here we go! The Cross at Charing Cross is a Victorian monument, but not in the original place. The original Cross was on the south side of Trafalgar Square, but was demolished Centuries ago for 'traffic' improvements. The site of the original cross is marked by a small plaque close to Londons smallest, one man, Police Station. (Forerunner of the Tardis?). Some Cartographers use this as the 'mileage' point for London, others use Charing Cross, but as they are close together it doesn't make a lot of difference. I wonder what a Sat Nav will use? Rob

No1 Are you sure it was in £'s? Around that time they could still have been paying in Ryals, Sovereigns, or Fine Sovereigns. £'s were mostly used in London. Or did they stick it on the Barclaycard! Rob I'll get me coat!

Gordon Brown a saviour?????????????????????? The idiot is a joke and as useless as Blair. They are responsible for the state of Britain now and far from being hailed as God's Gift they are reviled by most for making the World a worse and more dangerous place ( as proved by tha tragedy in Bombay which saw Briton's specifically targeted))

Gordon may not have done too well since taking the reins from Tony but his solving the worlds financial crisis was a masterstroke. When the electioneering starts people would have forgotton X Factor finalists, boom and bust and any terrorist act committed in the world. The Labour party machine will gear up, Tony will come back and give Gordon his full support (a bit like Mandy) and the election will be won. Like it not Gordon will be the man welcoming the world to London in 2012.

I see we have a lot of Toryboys on here. You have very short memories. You can hardly blame Brown for the world recession. Really silly. He's done the best he can I believe in the circumstances. Not very impressed with Cameron.

Gold is the only stable "currency" at the moment. sadly Gordon sold ours cheaply a few years ago. He "nationalised" RBS and almost immediately OUR shares fell by 20% costing us £2.5 Billion. He was the chancellor that controlled the banks while they were wasting trillions on junk debt. Yep, the mans a genius.
