I have heard from a reliable source that the mossie men who go to spray a particular insect have mixed the chemical with diesel instead of water, it was in this weeks Kibris Star, the article was in Turkish so I have had to rely on a translation, but its not good, we dont know what the normal mossie men use, they go round spraying mossies and sand fly.

The spray in question is used to kill what look like furry caterpillars which are apparently dangerous to dogs. Which begs the question as to why there is poison for dogs being left around.

Im not pointing fingers, Im ust thought this would be of interest to some.

The 'furry caterpillars' are commonly known as Procession Caterpillars, and are extremely dangerous to most small animals, and will even put a human in hospital for several days, sometimes weeks.

However, i seriously doubt that the Mozzie guys are targetting this creature as it takes a certain type of chemical to kill them.

HI daisy, I think what writergirl is referring to are the pine moth, these are furry and dangerous, but they have to use a plane to spray these.

The mossie machine uses diesel to mix with the insecticide I didn't know they used water, you can smell it as they pass. As it comes out as a fog I think it is heated.

You will see funny shaped cones hanging from the pine trees in the mountains to catch the pine moth, this gives the forestry dept some idea how many are in the area.

Don't confuse the pine moth with the hummingbird moth, there are quite a few of them around at the moment and they are harmless and pretty moths. If I'm not mistaken the pine months are about in spring time

had me a bit worried then, Ive had lots of moths inside that remind me of hummingbirds in the way they fly and the noise they make but told they are harmless. Would like to see a picture of the dangerous PINE MOTH.

Sorry daisy. I have been very busy, the links are quite correct but I do not think they spay for caterpillars at the same time as mossies, at least I have never heard of this happening.

So are mozzies a problem in north Cyprus? mind you I suppose you would get used to them once living there. Mozzies love me unfortunately, when are they most prevalent?

Rubyroo>>> I am still getting bitten at night, and it's been persisting down for a couple of days.

They never seem to go away, need ear muffs so I can sleep.

I think that I may be able to shed some light on this. The machine used by the belediye is a large version of a ulv machine which we use in the uk to blanket spray for insects. Normally we would use an oil based insecticide as the machine w originally designed to be used with this type of insecticide. Oil based insecticides are ready to use but can be costly especially being used in the volume that the belediye would need them. Newer versions of the machines allow for water based insecticides to be used but oil based insecticides are far more effective against flying insects with a better knockdown effect. Basically they are bigger versions of fly sprays. It is possible that the belediye are using an oil based spray and it does smell very similar to diesel so you could be forgiven for thinking it was diesel.
