Hi, helpful forum members - I know that we get a 'once in a lifetime' opportunity to import our household goods free from import tax but how long does this opportunity last? I think it might be just a year (please tell me if I am wrong) but is this a year from signing the contract, taking possession, getting the Kocan, getting the PtP or applying for residency? Sorry to sound a bit thick.

i think it may possibly only now be 6 months but i'm not sure on that.

i think it is timed from when you actually move here and get your residency.

As the rules change daily, a good place to ask is your importer. Ours sorted out all those details.

The basic premise was that they was a probability, not a right, to import your household goods free of duty as long as the goods arrive within 12 months of your arrival and that you have no intention of working here.

As long as you obey the rules you will not have to pay any duty, however as several have found to their cost try to bring in, for example several new TV's and you will get hammered.

We checked with customs about transporting TV, computer etc in original packaging and their response was - "that is most sensible as it came from Japan like that"!!!!

I know you will get negatives to our experience butas I said above, get your facts from importer and customs. Our importer was Olaytrans and theyw ere superb.

if you are bringing something new, just turn the box inside out and re pack it.

what they don't see can't hurt them.

again get your container cleared through lefkosa customs not famagusta.

we did and got charge next to nothing unlike some who were not so lucky.

if your bringing certian things you will need to get a permit.

generator(put it in a box and call it garden tools)

fax machine(put it in a box and call it computer equiptment)

cement mixer, they say you need on but we didn't have a prob?

guns, need to be declared and will be kept by customs until you have compleated the licence here.which wasn't a big problem.

thats all i can think of but i'm sure others here can add to that list.
