You can't even buy double cream now in the south, never mind in the north!

I saw Ileli were selling both clotted and double cream a couple of months ago. I don't buy it so haven't noticed since and I don't know if there is any left.

Also, although not labelled as such, Emborg long life cream is very thick but only if you buy the small 200ml cartons - the 500 and 1 litre seem to be nearer to single. The other thing about Emborg is that it doesn't have that 'long life' taste.

I agree with Mesg.5. Ilellis definitely had it, also Devon clotted cream. Go down to far back of the shop and it was with all the other creams.

I think that the original poster is looking for 'proper' fresh double cream as sold in the UK, not UHT or sterilised or whatever. This is certainly the kind of cream that I would like to be able to buy. Message 8: I will look in Alpha Mega next time I am over but I have never seen it there either. The two dairy companies who used to produce it in the south have both stopped. It certainly wasn't in litre packs but in small cartons.

Msg.10, it was "proper" double cream and clotted cream I saw in Ilellis i.e. made in UK. Not UHP type. Can't guarantee someone hasn't bought it all up for Christmas though.

I have the answer!

Regular readers will recall my post of a couple of days ago asking whether unsalted butter was on sale (thanks to all who replied).

The reason for this was that my mother reminded me of the "Bel Creammaker - an invention of the 1930's which can turn unsalted butter and fresh milk into fresh cream.

Bought one on eBay for a tenner - tried it yesterday and it works perfectly.

For my next trick, I will be turning water in to wine...

I bought Halta double cream in a long life pack a couple of weeks ago, in Illelli.

It was on offer in the fridge at the back of the shop.

We've used the first carton, and I've since bought another one for Christmas.

We ate the first one with blackberry and apple pie, then with Christmas pud.

Both times it went down very well. But, I suppose it's a matter of choice. It's well worth a try.

Beekeeper I never thought of using a cream maker and I have one unused in the back of a cupboard I have now dug it out and am going to try it.

Thank's to everyone else for the suggestions I will be going to the pork shop today and will call into Illelli and have a look there also. I will let you know if they still have any later.

Again thank's to all who responded.

Yes, they definitely treat the cream that you are buying in Alpha Mega - it's UHT, same as the cartons here basically. The Halta Double Cream that they are selling in Illeli is not cream either - it's a mixture of cows milk and 'vegetable oils'. There was a brief period, about 7 years ago I think, when Tempo had proper pasteurised double cream. They were selling it in yoghurt type cartons and it was excellent. Disappeared after about 2 months and has never been seen again! I can't believe that there is not a demand for this here as, when Tempo had it, you had to get there at about 8 o'clock in the morning to get some before it sold out. Knowing this place, it has probably been banned by some union or other!

Ilellis come the rescue again. It might be a small shop but by golly they are very rarely caught out!!
