Go to your local belediyesi office with your address and request someone to pick it up. No problem. However don't try to do it by phone, as i have tried this and it seems some sort of communication breakdown happens and nothing gets picked up. So go there in person with a belediyesi bill...

Yes, the Belly will do it, then they come up roads like ours and dump it into the ravine!! I see no reason why you can't do this yourself actually, provided it is just garden waste. Afterall, with this rain it will rot away very quickly and help weeds etc to grown and thus bind the sides of the ravines, in order to avoid land slip. Of course Msg. 2 is the favourite for most locals.

Thank you all for the replies..

wattys, I'm a local myself yet because we are relatively new in this area i thought maybe there is some sort of a system as throughout the summer our garden waste was being picked up regularly. Provided it is just garden waste I totally agree about the ravine idea. We have done it before but as long as there is someone to pick it up, we didn't want to exaggerate it.

I'll do composting - i think super home centre had some bins for that purpose..

I didn't know they would actually come by and pick it up if i told them to - thanks for the info daisy duke

If you come under Girne Belediyesi the office is near the Police Station and Wednesday market. The man in charge is Ali Bey. You tell him how much rubbish you have and where you live and he arranges collection. They do charge though for large amounts and nothing happens until you pay up. We paid 50TL last time but we did have a lot of garden rubbish. He told us it would be collected in the next few days which turned out to be two weeks, three visits and ten telephone calls later! Maybe the ravine is a better option!

The trouble with composting is, if its just garden waste, when you come to using it...you will have the biggest weed problem ever as all the weed seeds will just sit in there waiting for a chance to sprout....

Really, go have a word with your local Belediyesi.

Any monies you have to pay will be put on your Belediyesi bill.

I personally think nothing should be dumped into ravines (even garden waste). It just promotes flytipping....

Daisy Dukest the 50TL we paid was collected from us at the office and a receipt given. It was not put on our Belediyesi bill.

Bluechalk (or others)

Re message 6 where is Super Home Centre as I am interested in composting some of my garden waste?

Local enquiries have proved unhelpful.

Many thanks

Super Home Centre is on Greek side. There is one in the same building as Carrefour/Debenhams etc in Engomi.

Msg.9 Under normal circumstances I would totally and completely agree with you., however, as someone who lives right on the edge of the ravine and lost garden into the ravine during the rains of 2009, I do assure you that as much garden vegetation as possible needs to be put down the sides in order to try and bind the soil. Hopefull bushes will shoot and weeds multiply!!

D.D. Msg.11

No it was not Lapta. We live in Girne so they must have a different system.
