It appears as though the census is now going to happen on the 4th Dec and those that need to work on that day will require to have a pass issued to them (by whom i am not quite sure yet) because the police will be operating checkpoints.

So as usual the story is stay at home all day and make sure you are stocked up with essential provisions so that you do not have to go out.

Obviously the date may change again so I will endeavor to keep the information updated at: http://cyprusnow.info/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=334

Ralph96. If you are working away it doesn't matter. This only applies to the people who are in the TRNC on the day of the census, if you choose to have a short break over the border this also doesn't matter.

As stated earlier, if you are in the TRNC on the day of the census you are not allowed to move out side you home until aprox 18.00hrs, no alcohol is allowed to be served until this time, best stay at home with a cold beer.

What happened to ' it will be different next time'? After the last census the Government said that the ban on people going out and about wouldn't happen again because everything would be computerised. Oh well - feet up and watch the telly lol !

Ralph96. there is a curfew, nothing is allowed to move between 09.00 and 18.00, the police setup road blocks you will need a pass to be away from your home between these times. you will be arrested.

How does the Authority let people know that there will be a curfew, by letter, word of mouth or by using ex pats who love a system of authority? Is this done at the road blocks?

I suggest that the jails will be full or will they open the football stadium? Does the dog have to stay in its kennel?

Msg 11, 12, it shows you have never been in the TRNC for a census, this will be my third.

You may notice on the day the lack of cars on the road, you may think every one has left the Island until you come to a police road block. The information will be posted in the Kibris newspaper, if you are unable to read Turkish it is not the fault of the police, we are in their country. This rule even covers tourist, they have to stay in thier hotels and not even be counted.

When was the last census in the TRNC? I suspect I was just lucky that time that I didn't move out of my house otherwise I suppose I would have met a 'nice' policeman!

John, I see what you are saying about if you can't read Turkish it isn't the fault of the police, but likewise, it's not the fault of anyone else who chose to live here if they cannot speak enough Turkish to feel inclined to buy a newspaper written in Turkish. Surely someone in authority will have the sense to get the message circulated more robustly and in a few languages?

Anyway, what is the purpose of the census? Isn't it to count how many people live here and how will they do that, is someone going to come knocking at the door? Is there any information published anywhere about what the census is all about?

If you have employees who need to work on a Census day i.e. nurses etc, then permission or dispensation has to be obtained from the police for them to be on the roads and not at home. If for any reason you do not have a visitation despite staying in all day, you must then go to your local Belly, explain what has happened and fill in the forms with them. It may appear to be very haphazard, but they do take them seriously. It is their country, this is how it's done, and I would suggest you go by the rules.

Can't remember now. Sometime during 2005 "I think." I know it took less than 10 mins to do and the bloke from a local bank filled it in for us. i know I was a bit concerned because he did it in pencil and I thought to myself "he could rub that lot out and put just what he wants"!! After it was done, he then spent a further 10 minutes drinking coffee and telling us about the various members of his family that owned, car hire, petrol station, water lorry and a cafe!!

Sounds like a lock down. Census take place in nearly all countries but very few have the effect of stopping industry and the day to day workings of the country.

Why am I not surprised that such a system exists in the TRNC?

Bradus. the census happens on a Sunday, not what you would say is a industrial day in the TRNC.

To try and answer the questions, the census person will call at you place of residence and you will have to show them your passport or Kimlik card, this will or should match the address you are living at on their paper work, they ask how many people live at this address and require the rest to show their passports or Kimlik card. It all take less than 10 minutes. after the census people have called you may visit your friends in your street but are not allowed to leave this location until the time stated.

If you try to move around and the police stop you, they may take you to the police station for a census check, this will take a couple of hours till they try and find out if the details are correct, IS THIS WORTH THE TIME.

This is the best information I can give, if you feel you have to go out on census day please feel free to do so.

After all it's your time.

Wouldn't it be really simple if, when the census people have called, they issue you with an official 'receipt' confirming you have completed the census. You could then travel, and if stopped, simply produce the paperwork. Or is that, perhaps, simply too logical for the TRNC ?

dol you reckon if I go into the police station with him, during the week and he can show his plane ticket, that might do. Presumably any police station??? Or not???

I'm staying with a friend at the moment in their rented house til I find somewhere else so I don't think the police or anyone else will have any record of where I'm supposed to be. I've got no rental contract of my own. Does that matter. I'm obviously staying in the country legally, is that what counts?

Good question, MedOne. I have no idea . At the last cencus I did look up the web page, but that didn't help much either. I wonder if there is a comprehensive, informative one around this time. Yes, I know - someone will tell me to go and look.
