I personally haven't seen an opinion poll that confrims that the UBP party enjoys 40% of the TC vote, but if it is true, then clearly the TC's are unimpressed with the current government, the pro settlement CTP party.

UBP is the party of choice for Turkish settlers and extreme chauvanistic nationalists. The kind of war-mongering degenerates north Cyprus doesn't need or want.

If indeed the UBP party is indeed now in the lead it would be interesting to know what are the main reasons for CTP losing their poll position. What has made voters switch from the CTP to the UBP? Presumably also TC's have switched?

paul,

That depends on when the election is. Political analysis on the ground in Cyprus is pretty unreliable as so few sources are to be trusted.

It's also important to note that 76% of TC's would like to achieve recognition before a negotiated solution takes place. This I undertand is what the UBP party favours.

John

"The kind of war-mongering degenerates north Cyprus doesn't need or want."

More to the point it is what the South doesn't need.

Smile!

good afternoon mark

you are indeed very correct the ubp are well in the lead and is likely too be the next goverment.

you ask why the sift ,its simple since the start of the talks what has president talat achieved for us ,as one politician described it yesterday talat and christofas are in the playground and are arguing between themselves as friends do , however christofas is a lot smarter and is going and telling the teachers his side of the story ,he has since spoken to the uk and signed a memorandum ,he has since spoken too the russians and signed a memorandum ,he has since spoken too the chinese and all but sighed along the dotted line, and talat he is just telling the turkish that chritofas is not playing fair, what the people are saying to talat is why tell us why not tell the rest of the world ,it is they who should know ,we already know.

the minute christofas and the uk signed the memorandum talat should of pulled out of the talks,he has alredy lost.

I would have thought the government would have lost a lot of support purely on econonomic ground such as high inflation and higher taxes and charges. Some of this is of course due to external factors, drought, higher cost of imports and oil prices (until recently) etc but part can be blaimed on the current government management.

In most countries the hip pocket nerve and the publics sense of their job and economic security has more of am impact on voting than anything else.

AJ Msg 11,

If people make statements of fact they should back them up with evidence otherwise they are open to challenge. That's people who actually know something about Cyprus, of course. ;-)

Unfortunately, I can't copy any of the text. It roughly states that the newly elected leader of the ubp is likley to put pressure on Talat to ensure that he does not compromise the TC position in the Cyprus negotiation talks

John do you not partake of coffee shop politics in the TRNC? I think you would be surprised at the support for the UBP. When you can take some time out from your hectic lifestyle (hope the kids are coping in your absence) I would be only too happy to give you a tour of the coffee shops in Alsancak and Lapta and introduce you to the changing face of politics in the TRNC.

AJ,

It doesn't surprise me you get your information from coffee shops - such a sensible and reliable choice - but you should be listening and learning from Cypriots and not Turkish settlers.

I think that this thread really illuminates the politically concsious members on this forum. Well done to all.

Pleasure to read the varied view points on TRNC and cypriot politics.

The great thing about democracy is that the people decide and no one knows until the last vote has been counted.

What certainly seems apparent is that change is afoot and this change will have significant ramifications for North, South, TC, GC, et al.

Hopefully to the satisfaction of most and prosperity for all

Quite right AJ. The coffee shop I frequent shows that the populace are very disillusioned with the current Government and that includes Talat's cousin who is a friend of mine. For (UNST)ABLE SEAMANS info there is not a single mainland Turk goes in there either. The papers (try learning Turkish Pike) and the TV News also support this fact. Notice Pike the word FACT!!!!!!
