Check out Venus and Jupiter early evening tonight. Just to the left of the crescent of the moon. The two really bright lights reflecting from the planets that have been getting clearer as the moon shrinks will not be this bright for a while. Skogsy

If ever you get the chance to visit Jodrell Bank in Cheshire do go, there is a special auditorium where it shows the night sky at different times of the year, it is amazing and you really do feel as though you can reach up and touch the stars, a fabulous experience and very informative too.

Q: What is more useful: the sun or the moon? A: The moon, because the moon shines at night when you want the light, whereas the sun shines during the day when you don't need it. Sorry!

There's no need to wait for this month's celestial highlight; get outside tonight an hour after sunset, and look to the southwest. There, low on the horizon, the crescent moon forms a tight triangle with Venus and Jupiter. Google........... moon, venus jupiter

December 1, 2008 - Sydney Morning Herald (Aust) THE world may be facing its worst economic turmoil in decades, but the heavens are about to smile on Australia. A rare cosmic alignment tonight will produce a smiling face - or an emoticon, depending on your generation - high over the country. From soon after 8pm until just before 11pm the planets Venus and Jupiter will stare down from the western sky like two brilliant eyes. Directly below, the crescent moon will form a happy mouth. "I think it will be very spectacular," Sydney Observatory's astronomer, Nick Lomb, said. "The three brightest objects in the night sky will all be in the same patch of the sky." As the night draws on, Dr Lomb predicted, "the smiley face" - with Venus playing the left eye and giant Jupiter the right - "will improve and become a little more compact". That's Sydney time of course....

Just answered a question I was going to post. Left Simena about half hour ago to walk home and got smacked right in face with this brilliant sight. Could not see it by time we got home as all behind the mountain. The night sky is a mystery to me but when you see phenomena like this just adds to the great life we have here.
