This morning, we awoke to lots of dogs barking which is a bit unusual for here, when I looked out of the bedroom window I saw 2 large dogs and 1 little dog looking down at a fully grown pointer which was stuck in the swimming pool next door. The pool was half full of water (to the top of the sloping bit) and I think the silly thing had jumped in for a drink. Anyway, he was well stuck, hubby said leave it, it will get out but as he said it the poor thing tried to jump out and fell back in really heavily, must be shockingly bruised now.

I got my clothes on really quick and dashed out - to my husband's dismay, he was sure I would be bitten, the other dogs ran off and when I jumped down into the swimming pool, I spoke to the dog and gave him my hand to smell. He cowered down on the floor, absolutely terrified. I spent a few minutes trying to reassure him and then picked him up bodily and got him out. He did not run off, he waited for me to get out and licked my hand.

Then he ran off with his doggy friends.

I am posting this in the hope that you will all just take a look into empty properties swimming pools when possible, we certainly did not think this could ever happen and we are so glad that we were here and not in the UK when it happened.

All he wanted was a drink of water.

That was such a brave and kind thing to do...one lucky dog in you being there and selfless enough to help him.

I was impressed that his doggy friends did not want to leave him and barked so much to attract attention!

If hubby HAD got into the pool he would have been as stuck as the dog - and I would NEVER have picked him up and got him out! His old hips do not allow for that sort of activity. Believe me, he would have done it if he could. He is more of a dog-lover than me. I like dogs but even if I hadn't it would have made no difference in this case.

Lovely story Sue and well done . I too am impressed that the other dogs gave warning - they are much cleverer than we sometimes give credit for!

May I point out that that unattended unprotected swimming pools (whether empty or full) can be dangerous not just for dogs, but for other animals - and children - there have been cases in the UK of children seriously injured falling into a empty pool. And the owner could be held responsible in law , even for adults even if trespassing, particularly if the pool was easily accessible.

AS for providing watering holes for strays, dont site these too near the house as not only will it attract a lot of strays which might upset your neighbours, but less desireables such as snakes!

Well done Sue

We have 2 'street' pointers and that is exactly how they react when first meeting you until they learn to trust you. Even then they are still very reserved.

Nice one - thankfully they found a pool near you.

This lovely dog had a collar on but no KAR ear tag so must have had a home somewhere, hope he goes back there now he has had a scare!

I never thought for one minute he would bite me, he was so scared and submissive.

Please, please just a quick glance at neighbouring swimming pools
