Turkish President Abdullah Gül has made harsh criticisms about the Greek Cypriot Administration’s preparation to unilaterally take over the EU term-presidency in the second half of 2012 before a solution is found to the Cyprus problem. “The Greek Cypriot Side became a member of the European Union by violating the EU principles” Gül said and noted that the term-presidency of “half a state” would only prove the EU’s weakness.

“The Greek Cypriot Side became an EU member in an inadequate way, as ‘half a state’. And now it prepares to become the term-president of the EU. Such a half state to rule such a miserable union” Turkish President Gül told reporters during his contacts in Britain.

Referring to his meeting with the British Prime Minister David Cameron, Gül said he told Cameron that unification of Cyprus may become impossible if the EU does not put forward its strong political will against the Greek Cypriot Side’s unwillingness towards a solution.

The Turkish President also stressed that Turkey and Britain, as two guarantor powers in Cyprus, are supporting the ongoing Cyprus negotiations aimed at providing a comprehensive solution to the Cyprus problem.
