On the 4th of December I am doing a 10 mile sponsored walk in support of the Cypriots who are occupying the buffer zone in Nicosia. If anybody wishes to join me they are welcome, however if you can’t join me and would like to make a contribution no matter how small you are also welcome.

I live in London. Just pledging some money is just as good. After the walk, I shall explain how to actually make payments. Any support no matter how small would be appreciated.

YFred - In Erkin's (one of the group in the buffer zone) post of 22/11 "Occupy Buffer Nicosia" he specifically requested that cash donations NOT be made. Only food items etc. were asked for.

Has this changed? Your comments please.

They did say that, and we will have the cash converted to food and drinks as per their wish. I will have Yorgozlu collect cash and buy the necessary drinks for them. Collection and delivery is not a problem, raising the money is the most important at this stage.

It does not matter where you are, please pledge and I will make arrangement for collection. This has happened all too sudden so nothing planned but we must try to do our bit.

If anybody else volunteers to collect sponsorship and delver food to Nicosia I would be most grateful.

Yfred, "I have publicised this on the other so called "Cyprus Forum" and all I got was loads of abuse. You would never guess they actually love the borders."

That's because even though you call it 'our island' they have been told it's theirs.....

Just a note: if you actually visit these people or just walk through the crossing point you will see very little about a united Cyprus, but you will see a lot of anti-capitalism literature. Along with the graffiti down Ledra/Lidra street.

Not being critical of your sincere efforts, but the money would be better going to the Embargoed group who are very pro-active in the UK and want a balanced settlement.

No Borders is a fine first step to aspire to. Being anti-capitalist is no bad thing either. This is a cross community effort whilst Embargoed is only a TC effort, not that I do not sympathise with embargoed, because I do.

We now have 3 days left to the sponsors walk and these young people are actually showing the world that they can live together so come can we have some more pledges please.

I have now reached 153 quid but could do with a bit more. It is getting cold and they will need fuel as well as food and drinks. And of course not forgetting that if it helps towards peace we will all gain from their effort.

Not asking for a lot, just what ever you feel like giving.

Thanks

I am not sure if the group is bound together by a belief in anti capitalism or by a genuine willingness for Cypriots to live together. If both then we know they propose a type of socialist/communist type of order on the country

Anyway put me down for a tenner. I wish I could contribute more but times are hard.

Have to agree with message 22. Very little comes across about a united Cyprus. Graffiti about equal distribution of wealth and having to produce I.D. when buying Efes has little to do with the subject.

The barefoot "rastafarian type" or didgeridoo player convey nothing at all about Cyprus and both are prominent.

Thanks ilovecyprus, much appreciated. Any body else out there? It does not matter how much, what ever we can afford.

To me the fact that there we have young GSs and TCs together in the buffer zone speaks volumes as to their intention. It can only grow.

Think about how the vietnam war opposition started and where it ended.

If you are communist and are a Greek Cypriot, then support this.

Try and find a true Turkish Cypriot 'who lives full time in the North' if you can.

Nothing at all to do with a united Cyprus.

You HAVE to go and see them. Don't comment from the UK as you have not been there.

Wylam, I don't know where you spend your time, but I was there e this summer and I have around 200 close relatives who all live in the north full time and none of them that are civil servants. Most University Graduates from Turkey who earn their living in Cyprus.

As to these people, they remind me of the hippies that started a movement to stop the USA from killing Vietnamese civilians. They did not do much either.

These people believe in no borders. no matter what else they believe in it is an absolute first step towards unification, and I know may TCs that support their effort. In Lurucina 500 people have been begging for the border to be removed to no avail so far.

The reaction they had from some politicians who visited them as well as how they are ignored by the media speaks volumes.

Hello Y Fred, I spend my time, ALL my time in KKTC, TRNC, North Cyprus or whatever you want to call it. I don't care if you have 2,000 relatives here and what have these people got to do with Vietnam?

Did I mention Civil Servants?

This lot at the Ledra street crossing point are mainly out of work layabouts, 21st century hippies, Greek Cypriot Nationalists, Extreme Socialists with the odd misguided Turkish Cypriot on a weekend (although I have yet to find one on my regular crossings).

I know you spout forth on numerous websites North and South, but what you quote as facts are anything but facts!

YFred; Although we never met, I think we were "thread pals in the (GC) Cyprus Form when we supported each other's arguments in favour of a united island, against the fanatic GC youth (and many adults in fact) who had a habit of seeing themselves as "the Master Race", and spitting venom at the very idea od having to share power with TCs

In fact most of them argued (and still do), the island is a Hellenic island bu some God given right etc etc. That being the case my friend, is it really worth the effort, and more importantly, would it be safe to ask for a united island at this stage? The impossibility of having a sensible arguments against these Greek fanatics stopped me from posting in that forum

Although I would support and have great sympathy for all the Cypriots who are genuinely seeking a union in our country, I must be realistic and accept the sad facts. Namely another decade or two where the education system on both sides educate young members about the true "Cyprus History"

BigOz, We have two choices in life either United Cyprus or United Turkey and I know which one I would choose. These fanatics are the reason why TCs will only accept BBF solution as things stand. I see BBF as the first step towards full unification but I would not hold my breath, it may well take another 37 years before we can build enough trust between the two communities.

In the mean time, we have to try to get the younger generation to word towards peace, what have we got to loose. If they start the old tricks, the borders close again. This will only work if both sides wish it and make it work.

I feel these youngsters are making an effort. So I intend to continue to support them in any I can.

Regarding the verbal wars we had in the other forum with the fanatics? how can I forget. However, they hate these people so much that even the decent GCs on that forum felt the need to only pledge privately. So really taking the same side as the fanatics is not an option for me.

I have now done the walk without any problems except a few blisters here and there on my feet. I feel better for it though.

Wylan, that was the cheapest trick I have ever seen trying to attack me. At least you should have stated 2 facts which I have expressed and and which you believe not to be true.

Go on have a go find two non-facts?

Hi Erkin, I am a TC living in London who has been posting on this forum for some time. Although not so much recently. When I heard that some young Cypriots both Turkish and Greek occupied a bit of the buffer zone and are requesting that we removal of borders and unite our island and were asking for food, drinks and fuel, I decided to do a sponsored 10 mile walk. I have people who have pledge money from Cyprus both north and south, as well as UK and USA.

The idea is to get this sponsorship money to Cyprus and buy these people what they require. How this money is going to be collected is not decided as yet but will be by tonight. Reference to Yorgo was that I was going to ask him to collect the money promised in Kyrenia are, there will also be somebody in the south and London. I hope to have available paypal and bank account for this too so anybody who wishes to contribute can. However if you are happier to just go there yourself and give them some food all the better.

Yfred, the reason i asked you about it, I am not sure if you have seen my previous posting dated 24.11.2011 I am one of the Tc who along with few other TC and Gc started the ledra Street sit in.

In many of my Cyprus44 messages on this topic, I asked that no cash be given to any person at the camp and if people wanted to donate something all well and good, if that is what you are going to do, then fine, but please do not collect the cash and hand it to anyone in the sit in, we do not want to be seen as collecting cash.

this will give the people on both side some to accuse us with.

As stated thanks for all that you are doing but make sure that the cash is converted to food and fuel.

I wish to thank all for their support.

I will be contacting you personally as to how to pay the pledges to and it will be somebody you know and trust from this forum. If anybody else wishes to contribute for a very worthy cause please do not hesitate to let me know.
