Retro means outdated or aged trends, fashions, from the past. PP's a modern man

Sorry should have explained that last remark. PP's a modern man - meaning Retro is quite fashionable now. (if that makes sense!)

Kay,

I never doubted you... ;¬)

I was a Beatles fan simply becasue 3 older sisters in that era dictated that was what would be most often heard and Rubber Soul really made me think about music...

Grew to like the Stones when "Paint It Black" was being played and shown on TV. I thought the melody was mesmerising and still think it to be their best song. Although when I was that young I did not truly understand the lyrics.

Mick Jagger & Keith Richards wrote Bittersweet Symphony a big hit for The Verve... who didn't really get permission to nick the song....

Ah, but like Eric Morecambe said to Andy Preview "I play all the right notes, just not necessarily in the right order"

That's a typo... using the wrong letters is not a typo is wrong spelling.. of which "definately" appears to be the most common..

Definitely The Beatles. How many timeless classics did they come up with? They not only revolutionised music but also the way it was recorded. It was due to them that I picked up a guitar and have been a musician ever since, and still rocking!!!!

Also a word for one of the great unsung hero's, the great Peter Green and the original Fleetwood Mac

Watched the Bootleg Beatles last night at The Dome Brighton.

Brilliant show! A lot of teenagers were in the audience outnumbering the silvertops.

Saw Bill Wyman and friends early part of the year at the same venue. One of the artists guitar player Albert Lee was brilliant.

Both shows rolled back the years?

I would say the Beatles just shade my vote.

Unfortunately poor old Keith Richards can no longer really play the guitar in anger... has to use a body-double on stage... it's the arthritis I think...

Who was your favourite Beatle... mine was George Harrison even though I played the drums... I really loved his melodies and think his contribution was the equal of the Lennon/McCartney duo...

Ringo was very underated as a drummer he was always there and rock steady with his tempo...

My favourite Stone was Charlie Watts simply because he looked so laid back. As he could play his part standing on his head I guess he was...

I have had the pleasure of going twice to the festival. In my opinion the best in the UK. I was disappointed not to be able to attend last year as the Police I am sure would have been great.

Looking forward to going next year though. Whoevers on I do not really care as the whole experience. (even the camping). is greeeeaaaaat.

Simbas,

Yeah not the most photogenic lead singer... which only goes to show his voice must be good...

Southside Johnny of "Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes" is another great voice... with a not so great look... they were the springboard for one Bruce Springsteen.. of whom the music agent said... "great guitarist... don't let him sing though!"

The rest is history

Been to see Lionel Richie several times and Errol Graham as well, and at all the concerts there were loads of young kids and not so young. Obviously been brainwashed by their parents, but great to see them enjoying the music.

Totally agree that these two were great. Oeter Green was I think the best guitarist of all time (subjective opinion I know) with the tone of his guitar breathtaking. That guitar was sold last year by Gary Moore for I believe $3million as it was considered the most desired guitar in history!!!!

I did once play Paul Kossofs original Les Paul (he had more then one ) at a guitar festival in Newcastle but I souldn't afford to buy it.

How about Badfinger. Discovered by George Harrison, signed by The Beatles, wrote Without You and probably the most tragic band in history due to the suicides.

Best guitarist of all time.... wow that's tough - there are so many greats... it's difficult to pick one for all styles and say yes that's him...

I would have a short list of...

Ry Cooder for Roots n' Blues

Eric Clapton for early English progressive rock and blues

David Gilmour for Pink Floyd he knows when not to play too many notes!

Antonio Forcione for electro-acoustic world music

Jim Hall - Semi-Acoustic Jazz, Gibson have listen to him with the Paul Desmond Quartet

Martin Taylor - European Jazz in the Django Style also with Steve Howe on

Masterpiece Guitars playing vintage & fine guitars from the Scott Chinery Collection one for Gibson and Snakes.....

Jaco Pastorius - Jazz Bass... so many bassists have been moved on a notch by the late, great Jaco..

As you rightly say Groucho it is really impossible to say who is the best but my favourite is Peter Green for his tone, feel and superbly melodic playing.Agree with all the players you have suggested

Here's a few more!!!

Paul Kossoff

B.B. and Freddie King

Andy Powell (Wishbone Ash)

Robert Cray

Nathan East Bass player of extreme talent

Steve Morse

Gary Moore- for his Blues NOT metal

And not forgetting George Harrison who was very underrated. A fantastic player who always played to complement the song rather than highlight his own prowess

It was a hit in the UK for Toots and the Maytals in 1969... so maybe not a Specials one after all... they must have been a cover band! ;¬)

A friend, Simon Currie who plays sax for various line-ups including The Manfreds and The Blues Band, got me into Jaco Pastorius now I just love the expansive nature of his playing and tone.. such a shame his mental illness and exposure to drugs cut short such a creative life...

Paul and Barry Ryan I seem to remember... not sure who Marian is/was...

Arrry

I don't know about the ABC sorry left Aldershot area in 1982...

You take me back though... I used to go to the Shots as a boy with my father... we used to take van loads of disabled kids too, my mother was a Matron at Lord Mayor Treloars College and she insisted my dad took with us as many as would fit in one of his company vehicles..

At first I resented this as I wanted my dad all to myself... we didn't do many things as a father and son.

I soon realised they were:-

A. the funniest people I'd met in my life and

B. told the most cruel cripple jokes about each other and

C. Had the most positive attitude to life of any group of people I've met before or since...

I soon got to look forward to the next time we'd meet and never really worried about them hogging my dad's attention.

Doyen,

Msg 92

The really sad bit in Jaco's life was he was mentally ill for a long time and went undiagnosed... got into drugs because he couldn't handle it on his own..

He was surrounded by loving people but they didn't know enough about mental illness to spot his manic behaviour getting worse... and ultimately he took his own life in a self-destructive moment of despair...

Those left behind carry a heavy burden of self-inflicted guilt which is probably more tragic than fair...

Don't agree on Clapton although I will concede he is a bit "safe" these day's but perhaps that comes with age. Also I know B.B. usins his "Box" but still got bags of felling. I did forget to mention Stevie Ray Vaughan ( how could I forget)

Amazing to see so many people with so much knowledge about music !!

So does it mean the music and musicians from the sixties/seventies were better musicians than the ones today ??

All the names cropping up are from those two eras.

Have we not got any GREAT musicians nowadays ??

I think there are some GOOD musicians around now, but the GREAT ones have been around a while. Part of the reason in my opinion is that the music has changed so much. Much of today's offerings ( though by no means all) is keyboard based where you can press a button and you have a whole Oechestra behind you. This to me isn't talent.

Back in the 60's when I and so many others learned to play you learned on a "plank of wood strung with strings like cheese wire" and many is the time my fingers were bleeding. Todays range of "student" equipment is fantastic but this seems to just make the youngsters want to be able to play as fast as possible without any feeling a la Yngwie Malmsteen, technically brilliant but leaves me stone cold as there is no feeling behind it to my ears.

Hope this helps but remember it is only my opinion and many others would disagree

Some Trivia.

On July 26, 1968, Mick Jagger flew from Los Angeles to London for a birthday party thrown in his honor at a hip new Moroccan-style bar called the Vesuvio Club—“one of the best clubs London has ever seen,” remembered proprietor Tony Sanchez. Under black lights and beautiful tapestries, some of London’s trendiest models, artists, and pop singers lounged on huge cushions and took pulls from Turkish hookahs, while a decorative, helium-filled dirigible floated aimlessly about the room. As a special treat, Mick brought along an advance pressing of the Stones’ forthcoming album, Beggars Banquet, to play over the club’s speakers. Just as the crowd was “leaping around” and celebrating the record—which would soon win accolades as the best Stones album to date—Paul McCartney strolled in, and passed Sanchez a copy of the forthcoming Beatles single “Hey Jude/Revolution,” which had never before been heard by anyone outside of Abbey Road Studios. Sanchez recalled how the “slow, thunde

Sanchez recalled how the “slow, thundering buildup of ‘Hey Jude’ shook the club”; the crowd demanded that the seven-minute song be played again and again. Finally, the club’s disc jockey played the flip side, and everyone heard “John Lennon’s nasal voice pumping out ‘Revolution.’” “When it was over,” Sanchez said, “Mick looked peeved. The Beatles had upstaged him.”

Having lived through the sixties and seen and heard some amazing bands i

Free ( Kossof ) and Queen ( May ) will always stay in my mind as being the

Yes. I have the 'White Album' and most of all their other albums, sadly almost all on CD.

I had all the original Vinyl albums up until 5 years ago. We were moving house and my wife decided she would do a 'boot sale'. You know what I'm going to say next - she took the wrong box of albums and sold them all for between 50p and a £1. One luck punter bought the lot of them. I was absolutely distraught. A lifetimes collection.

You are so right. Back in the 60's ;guitar, amp maybe an overdrive pedal and a wah wah end of story. Nowadays there are pedals for everything, some a good innovation, many a waste of time.

On the other hand have a look at Dave Gilmour's rig to see how effects can be used if you are good enough ( which I am not) and use them to complement rather than mask your ability and sound. With some rigs I've seen you'd have to be a ballet dancer to try and use them

You can't beat vinyl for making flower pots... horrible scratchy stuff... I used to think my Thorens Desk with Shure V15 Mk III Cartirdge produced the best sound but now I'm not so sure it was ever as good as the current high quality CDs...

Purists, they love their vinyl and refuse to be convinced about CDs but after 10 plays of an LP the odd crackle and pop appear... ambiance my arse! I think they are reactionary snobs... ;¬)

Whaddya fancy?

Some like Tina Turner are sold out, others available. We do at times end up with free places in our box. At times we try to give them to charities/good causes etc but often end up with 'no-shows' or cancellations.

I don't know if you've been before, but it is an amazing venue.

Happy to help if I can.

My old firm's Annual Balls/Parties are legend...

One year the top act was rumoured to be Kylie... loads of testosterone charged males were waiting for her to arrive when a helicopter landed and 5 pug ugly Irishmen turned up instead... Westlife got booed and they were rubbish too.. half the audience walked off home...

We had top acts like Robbie Williams who was tremendous, never sang a bum note and ripped the place up... backing band were top notch too.

Bryan Adams, rocked the place

Elton John, all the old greats

Lulu, more class and still fit

Jools Holland Big Band absolutely wonderful stuff

Madness... very, very funny and tight as band..

The Corrs... Excellent celtic mood music

Spandau Ballet, all the old greats again

so many I can't remember...

Mind you it was Vodafone and they did use places like Earl's Court... with a funfair indoors and a comedy club.....
