Are Newspapers too powerful?

The Sun Newspaper obtained over One Million signatures for the purpose of bringing to account the social workers who were associated with Baby P. As a result 4 social workers lost their jobs today.

Would they have lost their jobs if the Sun had not instigated this petition?

Yes. They were found to be negligent so it's immaterial anyway whether there was a petition or not.

Spot inspections now on all Local Authorities. It's about time.

very debatable.

Newspapers and media in general seem to define what is the moral high ground. Do they have the right to do this. No., but they certainly have the power and influence.

And ,of course, a good morality based story sells newspapers. A readers poll and an on going collection of signatures serves to keep the story going and revenue comming.

AND they are just 1 (or 3 actually) of hundreds of thousands who have, are about to, or will be in the future WHO haven't done anything wrong, or as wrong as be so negligent as to let a child die, when it was wholly preventable.

Question is "Are newspapers too powerfull"

Already 3 posts that address morality. This thread could soon degenerate into the likes of the gutter "hang em high" gutter press.

Isn't it a FACT that a baby died whilst Social Workers and their hieracy did nothing? Seems pretty factual to me.

RE No1Doyen, msg 1 : (...) Are Newspapers too powerful? The Sun Newspaper obtained over One Million signatures for the purpose of bringing to account etc (...)

===> Aren't it always the same kind of newspapers (everywhere in the Western world) polling their readers? I'd say don't blame the newspaper for knowing how their readers think and what they want - blame the low level and the sad state of mind of the readers. Lynch mentality it's called, I think.

Groucho,

Oh the peculiarities of the English language...

I think that DC's error was looking at 'kind of newspapers' and thinking "Aha! - third person plural ='are'..."

That really is the sort of trap that any non-native speaker would be prone to falliing in (He says, ending a statement with a preposition).

Or would he only be prone after he fell in the trap?

Keep taking the tablets,

Keith.

===> Stupid me, Groucho! The same rule applies in Dutch: "kind of newspapers" ("soort kranten") - never, not ever third person plural. If it wouldn't please so many people I'd commit suicide...

Dutch.

I can see you are a man of honour.. please don't fall on your own sword on my account...

I was, of course, amiss in not pointing out that your effort contravened a mere one of our quaint grammatical rules whereas vast hordes of the posters on this BB can manage to commit ten fouls in a sentence and not get a red card...

Mind you of late some of the sentences are more like novels.

What is the world coming to? I'll tell you what... a sticky end... a sticky end I say, a sticky end so will it be.... sounds quite uncomfortable does it not?

Newspapers too powerful?

You lot will have Gutenberg and Caxton turning in their graves!

My life has been dependant on newspapers.

In the early 50's, how else could I have made my Papier Mache 'Muffin the Mule'?

How would my parents have 'laid' the fire, or started a bonfire? In the 60's we didn't have luxuries like 'Kitchen Roll', our cress was seeded on the windowcill on damp newspaper!

Though it was a funny colour if you used the Financial Times!

In the 70's I bought a 'rolling Machine' to turn them into fire logs for the stove.

What has ever been better for wrapping 'Fish & Chips'??

Butlers and Hotels have been using them for centuries for cleaning glass, no need for chemicals or sprays, very eco friendly!

Nowadays newspapers are recycled as packaging for many products. The 'Metro' is especially useful for covering your stained seat on the Underground.

Treat your newspapers with respect!

But don't bother reading them first.

Sharon Shoesmith, Director of Children's services said that she didn't think a review of Baby P's death would be " beneficial".

For that one ludicrous statement she should be fired and not at home continuing to draw her £100k salary.

I agree. Comics for morons, some would say. But with so many stupid people out there you can't blame the publishers and advertisers for exploiting them. So many of the TRNC property adverts have been in tabloids for that very reason.

You're right No.1 and no doubt will be using in her favour the fact that in their last Ofsted report the rating for Haringey was 'Good' !!

A Millwall brick was a rolled up newspaper and then folded in half. I understand that if you hit someone with it, it was like being hit by a brick. I suppose they could carry it into a football ground easily as no one would have thought that it was a 'weapon'
