We are going to Istanbul in April and although we have been several times before we are looking for recommendations for a hotel. We do not want backpacking type of accommodation neither do we want real upmarket accommodation, something middle of the road that is central to the Blue Mosque area. We would like something like a family run hotel or similar we are not into the large multi run hotels. Many Thanks

Thank's ranas for the suggestion, but we really want to stay in the Sulhamet area, but will keep it in mind if we find nothing more suited.

Taksim is only a short, 10-15min metro ride from the Sultanahmet area. The metro runs on time, is exceptionally clean and the views apart from the first few minutes, which are underground, are amazing. Hotels around Taksim are far less "touristy" than Sultanahmet.....Give it a try!!

Just spent 5 days in Istanbul in Sultanhamet. Stayed in the Hannedan Hotel. Not sure what you are afterr. Room was small, warm but very clean. TV/Air con - some rooms havge view of Bosphorous - ours was great. No lift. Would say it was 2 star. No bar/small reception. Breakfast room on roof - plenty of it. 5 mins stroll to Blue Mosque/Topkapi Palace and Ayia Sophia. Not basic back packer or dorm type place but fitted our needs as we were out everyday and only in the room to sleep and change before going out again. Reception very helpful. Did the job for us. Loads of places to eat/drink at reasonable prices - restaurant next door was good. Can confirm it is cheaper if you take a short stroll elsewhere. Food - Donner sandwich 2 TL/Fish sandwich at Gelata Bridge 5TL. Evening meal about 30 - 40TL for 2. Pushed the boat out one night and spent 70TL - could not eat anything more! Check it out on Tripadvisor

I have stayed here twice, fantastic staff, supremely clean hotel and the restauraunt is Ottoman food to die for and at a very reasonable price. It is in Sultanahmet, a short walk from all the attractions there. A point to note if you are going in the summer........the air con is NOT centrally controlled as in a lot of other hotels, which means you control the temperature of your own room. http://www.consumerpressuregroup.com/trip-spring-istanbul/

We have some places that fit the bill for you (according to clients just back from their tailor made Istanbul tour). Would be glad to help but please take it off board. Watch out April can be rather jam packed so you need to have confirmed availability rather soon (preferably via a Tursab agent who can get you out of trouble if needed).

Stayed at the Byzantium in Sultanahamet last month. Excellent hotel, the roof restaurant / bar looks over the blue Mosque and some sea view rooms as well. The concierge Orhan is one of the most helpful people I have ever met and arranged so much for us and saved us a lot of time and money. 90 212 458 62 00 http://www.thebyzantiumhotel.com

Recently stayed at the Constantine Hotel, certainly fits the bill for what you are looking for. Situated close by to the Gulhane tram stop, which is one stop down from Sultanahmet.

Msg 8 At £20 per head for two nights B&B is good value for this hotel however, the Euro rules the roost even over the mighty Greenback when in Istanbul so take plenty of Euro's! The only warning is that these type of hotel deals can only be purchased On-Line and that the rack-rate just wandering off the Street will only apply, much more than the advertised web-site price. Do all transfers of monies in the TRNC money shops (NOT BANKS) as they are the best, fairest and updated buy/sell prices in the World. Richard

We stayed at the Hotel Tria a month ago , small well run and great for seeing the main attractions as it is in Sultanahmet, in a quiet street. Tom from FlightHoliday organised it and the hotel is ideal for what you want.

Jeremy Msg 19 - thanks; the price we negotiated for the Tria was right too? Hopefully the rest of your tour was to your liking as you organised through us a lot of travel in Istanbul and around Turkey.

I forgot to mention there is a street full of restaurants around the corner from this hotel giving one plenty of choice if you don't fancy eating in the Tria's roof top restaurant.

Susan, have a great holiday and don't forget to visit the cistern... it was featured in the film The International (starring Clive Owen) and our children thought it one of the best historical sites we went to... Not sure why but it was atmospheric. Some friends stayed in the Mina and had nothing but praise for it as a boutique hotel...

We are going for a week mainly to meet friends who are coming in on a cruise, but as I said in my original post we have been before, but still people keep mentioning things we did not know about.
