The whole Euro dream is crashing down soon and a big depression is coming. North Cyprus is a good place to be right now. Hang in there.

Strange - No mention of the government having to go cap in hand to the banking sector every month in order to pay civil service wages and pension payments.

I go into Kyrenia on a regular basis and can't say that I have seen any increase in the number of tourists about the place. That said, I don't frequent the casinos/brothels, so I might be missing something !! ;-)

I think it would be unwise to assume that TRNC (and indeed Turkey) will escape the global effects of a significant economic downturn - I am enjoying the benefits of minimal impact at the moment but have not counted on this lasting indefinitely.

Some time ago a TRNC President said that the TRNC was one of the richest countries in the world - because it had no international debt! Slightly tongue in cheek I suspect but many a true word spoken in jest!

The TRNCs economic isolation may turn out tobe a silver lining and help it weather the storm, but I cant see it completely avoiding the effects of global financial meltdown - too much dependence on tourism income and over thelast ten years two many inhabitants relying too much on consumer goods..

If Turkey gave the TRNC the bill for its upkeep it would be in more debt than the whole of the EU put together.

So NC is looking good. What about the UK?

Mervyn King the governor of the bank of England has today called on bankers to give up their bonuses in order that the UK banks are capitalised (as best they can be) in order to survive a possible collapse of the EURO.

Britain's government and banks exposure to the PIGS including Italy is 200 billion.

If the EURO goes belly up there may not be many Brits travelling to NC next year.

ILC

Not sure TRNC is looking good. Yet again Pensioners have been left waiting to receive their payments – because government hasn’t got enough to pay them. Allegedly the government are looking for a 15m TL bank loan to tide them over. This appears in complete contrast to what the Government is saying about all being rosy on the construction front, tourist market and University revenue.

Wonder if this is why their most recently introduced law is to cap interest rates on bank loans?

That's okay Bradus.

I can easily see why you drew that conclusion. I would have too. I was trying to get over the point of the EURO crisis without starting a new thread so I tied it in to this thread. It didn't work very well

Without doubt the Euro zone is in for a rough ride and the future looks grim as well as uncertain. No one could hide from the reality of this. It's in every newspaper and appears to be the most talked about topic on most TV and radio programmes.

In contrast the TRNC appears to take a completely different approach, pretending everything in the garden is rosy, tourism is on the increase, construction industry booming and any negative information dismissed. Yet we know this to be untrue. The news that the Government, yet again this month, needed to go cap in hand to the banks to pay its pensioners, and with Kibtec following the same borrowing path and tipped to be bankrupt by next year I suspect it won't be long before the bubble bursts and reality hits home.

I read this article with interest http://www.news.cyprus-property-buyers.com/2011/12/03/cyprus-a-country-in-denial-and-a-scandalous-political-leadership/id=009946.

This relates to the South but mirrors the situation of TRNC

Msg.29 Think you pressed the wrong button. Unless of course you have the answer to the Euro crisis, then you're more than welcome.
