Eroglu back on the scene with return to UBP head

By Jean Christou

DERVIS Eroglu has been re-elected to the leadership of the Turkish Cypriot National Unity Party (UBP), pledging to return to power and make alternative plans for Cyprus with “the Motherland”.

Eroglu, a former ‘Prime Minister’ of the breakaway state in the north, said after the election at the weekend: “What’s important from now on is the struggle we will wage to return to power.”

He said the Republican Turkish Party (CTP) of Mehmet Ali Talat, the Turkish Cypriot leader, was the main cause of the current problems in the north.

The party said in a written statement: “the Greek Cypriot administration was trying to extend the so called Republic of Cyprus’ sovereignty to the north.”

“The world is starting to understand us. The Greek Cypriot side will be punished,” said the statement. “These claims are all unfounded and the manifesto signed between the south and Russia is proof of this.”

it was not against the negotiations process taking place within the framework of the United Nations Secretary-General’s Good Office Mission.

Eroglu told Kibris newspaper after the election that the current ‘government’ in the north would come to the end of its life next June, and the UBP had no plans to enter a coalition with the CTP.

He said Talat did the right thing by launching the negotiations, but he committed a mistake by accepting a single sovereignty and single citizenship.

Afrika newspaper said Ankara had used the CTP for Plan A, and was now preparing for Plan B with a new coalition ‘government’ in the north. Plan B was designed by supporters of the status quo, the paper said.

“After the unification of the Erdogan government with the army in Turkey, a new policy is determined in Cyprus and the cover is being removed from the non-solution policy,” the paper said.

“With the plan which will be submitted to the table with the condition of ‘two peoples, two states’ in Cyprus, they will move from the veiled support of the TRNC to open support. Thus, the non-solution process will last for many years.”
