Sprouts only cause flatulence and tummy aches when they are overcooked. Serve them slightly crunchy and there will be no embarrassing moments! Lovely when lightly cooked, chopped roasted chestnuts mixed with them and then lightly tossed in a little melted butter. Yummy!

Yes I have seen lots of sprouts here over the last 3 weeks.

Very very nice ones I must add. Small and tasty, I have seen them in several small shops and the large super markets.

I just brought a few Kilo's and blanched them and froze them.

Ya Beles at Alsanjak have them ..... occasionally.

We love them - try them halved, lightly fried with some slivered garlic. At the last moment before serving, sprinkle a little soy sauce and stir! Yummm, going to have to go out now and find some!

as a fully paid-up member of the SLF (Sprout Liberation Front),

it is wonderful this unique vegetable is available in north cyprus

try picking them off their frosty stalk in a frozen english field,

and see how sweet they really are

indeed cooking is critical, too long and they mimic lumps of snot:

I heard you should remove the outer leaf for extra sweetness

and try steamimg for added bite

as for frozen sprouts, those versions do not like being kept

defrosted prior and cooking instructions must be followed exactly

an attribute of the sprout is its freshness and garden quality

acting as an interesting foil to the other greasy, salty, savoury,

things on yer plate

Brussels sprouts, as with broccoli and other brassicas, contains sulforaphane, a chemical believed to have potent anticancer properties. Although boiling reduces the level of the anticancer compounds, steaming, microwaving, and stir frying does not result in significant loss.

Brussels sprouts and other brassicas are also a source of indole-3-carbinol, a chemical which boosts DNA repair in cells and appears to block the growth of cancer cells.

Whatever cooking method is employed, it is important not to overcook them, which will render them gray and soft.

Overcooking releases the glucosinolate sinigrin, which has a sulphurous odour.

The odour is the reason many people profess to dislike Brussels sprouts, having only ever tried them overcooked. Generally, six to seven minutes boiled or steamed is enough to cook them sufficiently. However, they taste best when sauteed or roasted.

Lemar has them sometimes too. Cook them in chicken stock and add chesnuts. Lovely.

My mum taught me to score a cross in the stalk end to enable cooking without over doing it.. thanks mum GRHS!

Raw sprouts shredded with chopped walnuts and sultanas dressed with a mustard, honey and balsamic vinaigrette makes a lovely accompaniment to cold turkey etc.

I watched on Fatafeat a lovely Italian woman (Lydia) strip all the sprouts leaves off and place in a basin, chop some pancetta = fry it off, when it was crispy, she added the sprout leaves and just gave them five minutes in the hot skillet. I have not tried this yet but will be doing so in the UK this Christmas.

I wonder where you have all been getting your sprouts from because the ones we have in the UK are absolutely gorgeous, really sweet, I do agree though that it is probably because they have been 'frosted' Wonder if that makes the frozen ones sweeter? I really do not know, have never tried frozen ones.

Hope you all manage to find some nice fresh ones.

One of the very, very places you get fresh ones is certainly Ilellis, its just a case of popping in quite frequently because when they do have them, they go in a day (the word gets round)!!

the best sprouts are the ones that have been Winter "Frosted" ,it makes them sweeter, summer sprouts tend to be more bitter.......But I still love em...

It is in Azerbycan Sokak on yhe way up to Lapta Baspinar.

I am sorry I must have a mental block. I use it often and drive passed it every day and can't think of the name of it. Begins with a K.

I am sure some one will come on and post the correct name.

Also saw them in Starling. Lapta/Alsancak a few days ago.
