Not a sound outside...no vehicles on the roads....just the sound of nature.

Dont understand why some people are moaning about staying in for the day...i love it.

I wish it was like that here in Girne where I live (on the main road into town). The cars had been passing at a rate of one every 30 seconds or so and now it seems even more frequentlly so! The main roundabout just befor you hit town centre also seems busy...

Completely agree Iceman. The silence is bliss. Couldn't understand what was missing at first. Never thought I heard the sound of traffic until there was none.Suppose you get so accustomed to it, it no longer registers.

Never asked for passports, residency books, contract of sale/rent which we were led to believe they would require.

Strange questions.Do you have a computer, internet? Do you drink the water? Do you have aircon?

When it came to the section of relationships young lady was quite confused by the fact that we had different surnames. Decided to put my other half down as a visitor.

We've only been together for 24yrs, long visit!!!!

I think even the wind and the waves are under curfew! The sea is soooooo flat and quiet!

It was a lovely day for me too. Nice and quiet. After 7 pm went to the local grocer to get my paper, otherwise stayed home all day.

Yes a wonderful day - a chance to get things in the garden done without interruption, and listen to the wonderful silence - I had forgotten what it used to be like pre Anan without the endless background traffic noise. And of course the dogs didnt bark because there was nothing to disturb them, not even a cat yowling though I am not sure what put them under curfew!

Only snag from my point of view is that the Census takers didnt turn up, and like an conscientious idiot I reported it, so that arrived at 8.30 just when dinner was ready to take out of the oven.

Understood Deniz, but I dont know. Actually what I did was phone a Cypriot friend to check others had been missed or if it was something i said! He said he hadnt either and contacted the authorities, but I dont know whom he spoke to. He said they would be round at 8 but it was 8.30 hence the burnt dinner - but that, as we say so often, is Cyprus.!

I dont think is a big deal - seems a lot were missed! Understandable really, be fair they havent had a lot of practice at this kind of thing, and were coping with several foreign languages, not even just English, and new houses spread all over the place.

Also just curiosity - does anyone know where they recruited the "tellers" (is that the word?), I got three - a young woman with minimal English did the quetioning, but I think I reconisd one as a retired Post Office official - anolder man maybe one of the observers.

It's very peaceful and quiet where live, every day of the week. The usual day time noises are goat and sheep bells, birds singing and of course the call to prayers from the minaret.

With just the occassional car or tractor passing the house as the people from the village go about their day. My dog knows just about every engine sound of the dozen or so vehicles that do pass by and usually sits on the terrace watching them with mild curiosity and doesn't bark.

But yesterday the peace was shattered with the Census Officers buzzing around the village in 'strange' vehicles which he didn't recognise and he showed his indignance to the invasion loudly supported by the other dogs in 'earshot'.

Fortunately these strangers cleared off just before lunch time their tasks complete and peace returned once again. Yes I do love the sound of silence that's why I live here but I'm sure it wouldn't suit everyone. (At least I hope not!) Come the next Census I will go to peaceful Girne for the day!

The young girl who 'did' us was from Near East University, in her last year of Hotel Management and Tourism..... good luck with that, poor kid.
