Just been speaking with family in the UK. My father received a phone call on Friday night from a woman who claimed to be calling from Microsoft and who told him that they had detected he had a virus on his PC. He told her that he had a firewall and virus protection but she said that that was not able to detect this latest virus. She said she would talk him through what to do but thankfully he was sensible enough to say no, he needed to talk with his son first. She was very insistent he needed to do what she said immediately and in the end he had to put the phone down while she was still talking. He said she sounded like one of these telesales personnel from an Indian call centre.

This seems to be one of the latest methods being used to try to fool people - maybe she would have tried to get personal info, passwords, bank details etc. out of him. You've got to be very very careful, especially from cold callers. Please tell your elderly family members especially to watch out.

All, be very careful please. There has been quite a few incidents in the UK recently and my own elderly relative was nearly conned. Luckily she had the presence of mind to call me as she was waiting (!) for the perpetrator to ring back while she found her credit card (!).

All you need to do is hang up, no need to discuss the matter.

We had a simialar phone call. My wife answered and said that she does not have a computer (she only has one at work) and they put the phone call.

A day or so later something similar........it's best to say no!!!

Other option is to say that; you are working with a main frame computer with a propitiatory system that does not have internet just intranet access so which department of the company are they calling from what number and extension alongside needing their security code and log-in details before you can go further with the conversation.

By the time you have said half of it you will probably find they have put down the phone and will take your number off any list they are working from.

At some point they will probably ask you to enable remote access and then they do whatever their wicked intentions desire....

Best answer is 'really? we don't have a computer!' to which there is no logical way for the conversation to continue.... click!

Hi Donaldson,

"I thought everyone knew about this. Cyprus Today covered it back on 11 November."

Only if you read Cyprus Today

I don't think too much information on computer scams etc is a bad thing,

I'm being sent "Warnings" from others all the time.

Email hoaxes etc can be checked here...
