This evening a young, 'pure' bred but emaciated pointer dog (entire), turned up in our garden. We're on the mountain side, going west out of the village. He's a good looking dark brown with white freckling dog. If he's been lost by a hunter it must have been a week or more ago as he's very thin. Maybe I'm clutching at straws but I think he's been lost rather than dumped. Anyway if anyone knows anybody that hunts between Karşıyaka - Kozan area would they please ask if anyone's missing a dog. Thanks. Tel: 0542 872 4295

Unfortunately they are often dumped or just left up in the mountains. Our beautiful, brown and white Pointer turned up in exactly the same condition 4 years ago. He had a collar on but was very emaciated, covered in fleas and had a severe infection. It is amazing how many hunters are interested in him now! Good luck and I hope you find his owner.

You do not seem to realise, it takes a lot of time, knowledge and patience to train a gundog. the average Cypriot "hunter" has none of these. They take a dog into the mountains, shoot at anything that moves, and expect a young untrained dog to do what they think it should do.

Yes, they take a dog out, fire a gun and if the dog is scared or doesn't perform then it will be left behind when they leave.

On occasions they will also shoot the dog in the leg in order that it can't chase/ follow the car. I've seen hunters pass our house going up towards the mountains with two or more dogs in a trailer 3 hours later, come back with no dogs. Happens all the time.

Poor dog, hope you can find his owner. How can people be so cruel, they are not a "thing", they have feelings, they cant survive if you dumped them in mountain..

As I said in message 1, I'm well aware the dog was probably dumped. I'm also aware it takes a lot of time, knowledge and patience to train a gundog, having lived in hunting country in Scotland for many years. As I do not shoot myself there's no way for me to know if the dog is trained. What I do know is that he's a well made male dog of around 18 months, and's it's possible he was lost, but given how thin he is, it must have been a good few weeks ago. To other posters who have wished him well, many thanks, we will do the best we can for him, but with six dogs already it's difficult.

I live in the back of beyond in Ireland, where we appreciate a dog, but in TRNC everyone is a " hunter" , it is their macho thing , and dog welfare does not come into it, just look at the number of street dogs trying to be homed.

I would just like to say to anyone who dumps a dog or shoots the poor thing in the leg, how would they feel if it happened to them personally.

As I said in msg 8, the whole middle east ,not only NC , do not give a damn about animal welfare, or people to that matter, look what is happening in Syria.

I have been in Hisarkoy village for two weeks helping a friend out house sitting, the dogs who are just left by the weekend hunter's are left to wonder around. It's heartbreaking to see them all,we witnessed at least nine dog's just left at one weekend alone.I am now in tears posting this.

Pam, i know it sounds callous, but you must detatch yourself from this, this is the way people in NC treat dogs, how do you think I feel as a person who relies on dogs in our normal life.
