Whereabouts in Upper Kyrenia? Anywhere near the abandoned Night Club. (The large circular building inhabited by squatters) I am wondering because our friends live near there and the land in front was up for sale recently for the building of flats. flossie

Just had a read of the spec and have this question. I've always wondered about damp proof membrane in the houses they build in Cyprus. How can they work? In the UK the membrane is run along the whole length of the brickwork and crossed over at the corners, but in Cyprus because of the way the houses are constructed they can only run part way along because the steel structure is in the way and you can't run the membrane through the pillars. My question is how can this stop the damp coming up the walls because it would just climb up the steel pillars and spread along the walls. Only a thought which has bugged me for a couple of years now since they started adding it to the description of new builds. Karen

Karen, You are getting Plastic Membrane and DPC (damp proof course) mixed up here. 1000 Plastic gauge membrane is used in floors below ground, it stops rising damp entering in to the building. DPC is a roll of plastic or similar rolled out the length of brickwork at the level just above finished ground. It stops damp rising up the walls and in to the building. On outside concrete structures up to just above the finished ground a synthaproof (bitumen) is coated on the walls and columns t o stop rising/penetrating damp. Their is also a plastic sheet type material that is stuck on and does the same job. I have put this in the easiest of terms that I can for people to understand. Some hot climates do not seem to bother with either, which is a wrong move. Hope it has been of help to you. P. surgery now closed!!
