I've just learnt that Dobie Gray died on Tuesday aged 71. In the Soul genre he was a legend and recording in my opinion one of the best 'dance' records of all times (OUT ON THE FLOOR). He also recorded what was to become known as the record of the Mods(THE IN CROWD). But his probably best remembered for his classis DRIFT AWAY. sad sad news .



but another wonderfull soul artist will be looking down from heaven while his music is still played and danced to at many northern soul gatherings around the world.



his recording "out on the floor " is recognized as the no1 northern soul track of all time.

Three fantastic well known tracks (if you're a certain age) - a truly sad loss - one of the best.

Yes, we really thought we were 'The In Crowd' in 1967 in our little rain swept Northern Mill town ....

There's a terrific book about the Northern/Rare Soul scene titlers 'The In Crowd' (Ritson & Russell) which is well worth seeking out.

PS The Ramsey Lewis Trio did a nice, very hip, instrumental version, too.

Great memories of Wigan and then on to Blackpool. Can still feel the excitement of the rush on to the floor when 'out on the floor' was played
