Reported in today's Hürriyet Newspaper; GS ladies basketball team (Turkey) met the GC Apollon Limassol Volleybal team in the European Cup games. GS won by 3-0, but the GC spectators realising their team had no chance, started attacking the ladies by throwing seats, coins and lighters at the start of the 3rd set. Unprovoked, the Turkish team went on to win the third set too. One spectator jumped into the court and tried to physically attack the players.

Apparently the GS team had been virtual prisoners in their hotel since arriving in S. Cyprus day before yesterday, and they were not allowed out after the game either!

AND these are the same GCs who go to istanbul for holidays and participate in sports activities. Well I say, let them have their own medicine if there is going to be a return game in İstanbul. Bang them up in a hotel for 3 days and throw "Lillets" on to the court!

That is appalling, but surely it can't have been a basketball team playing a volleyball team.

How can there be a solution on this island when there is so much animosity towards all things Turkish. The GC's need kicking out of these games.

My apologies, it should have said basketball team and not volleyball

I agree they need kicking out, but the referees did not even stop the game where they should have! We had witnessed this about 2 years ago against a male team that travelled to Cyprus and in fact during another European event in Athens when Efes Pilsen basketball team were attacked by the spectatots after winning. They literally tore off all the plastic seats around the court and threw them at the players who struggled to get out with others physically assoulting them on the court.

I wanted to say "bad losers" but I think it is more of a case of Greeks being just "LOSERS" in todays World...

It is always just a small percentage who behave like that, but it needs only a very few and they are scary.

In England when a German Football team (no it was not 1966) won, vandals attacked the Germans and shouted Nazis out etc., then damaged and vandalised German made cars in the streets.
